City's Champions League Challenge: Injuries and Rotation Ahead
City head into Europe with a perfect league record still gleaming, but Enzo Maresca will not cling to the formula that edged past Coventry. A 1-0 win, sealed by yet another Erling Haaland strike, kept their domestic momentum rolling. It also underlined something else: this squad is about to be stretched on four fronts, and rotation is no longer optional.
Injuries complicate the plan
The Coventry game delivered more than three points. It delivered problems.
Nico O’Reilly was set to start but pulled up in the warm-up with a lower back issue, forcing a late reshuffle and a call for Enzo Fernandez to step in. Then Deadline Day arrival Iliman Ndiaye limped off with a knock, heading straight for the treatment room already occupied by Jeremy Doku.
Those knocks arrived just as Maresca had already nailed his colours to the mast. The City boss had promised change for the trip to the Estadio Do Dragao, and he did it publicly.
“We saw today with Ayyoub [Bouaddi], [Ryan] McAidoo, Iliman Ndiaye, they haven’t played in Champions League but they need to start, so on Tuesday they are going to start to get minutes in the Champions League,” he told reporters after the Coventry win.
The message was clear: Europe will be used to blood and trust new faces.
Ndiaye wait, youngsters ready
The big question now is Ndiaye. His fitness hangs over Maresca’s selection board. He has been pictured in training, a positive sign that the knock is not serious and that he should be ready to go in Porto.
If he gets the green light, Ndiaye is expected to take up his place on the left flank. On the right, Ryan McAidoo is in line to come in, with Antoine Semenyo likely to drop out. Enzo Fernandez is set to operate as the No10, tasked with knitting attacks together behind the front line.
Deeper in midfield, Ayyoub Bouaddi will get the start Maresca promised. He is due to line up alongside Elliot Anderson at the base of midfield, a youthful pairing charged with controlling the tempo on Champions League turf.
Behind them, the back four should be the one area untouched. Josko Gvardiol, Marc Guehi, Ruben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov are all expected to retain their places, offering continuity in front of goal. Matheus Nunes has been named in the travelling squad and is another option Maresca can turn to if he wants fresh legs or a different profile in midfield.
Haaland to start despite rotation warning
Up front, the conversation always circles back to Haaland. Maresca has already warned that the Norwegian will need careful management as City chase honours on multiple fronts. The minutes will have to be controlled. The rotation will come.
Just not yet, it seems.
Despite the talk of rest and the looming fixture congestion, Haaland is still expected to lead the line in Portugal. When the stakes rise and the anthem plays, Maresca looks set to trust his prolific No9 once more.
