Chiefs Pursue Fawaaz Phili as Du Preez Eyes Stellies Return

Kaizer Chiefs are refusing to loosen their grip on Fawaaz Phili. Not now. Not with a new season looming and a rebuild in full swing under Fernando da Cruz.

From their pre-season base in Spain, the Glamour Boys are pushing hard to land the Stellenbosch FC winger before the 2026/27 Betway Premiership kicks off, with talks between the clubs understood to be edging forward behind closed doors.

No statements, no press releases, no fanfare. But the negotiation lines are buzzing.

Chiefs’ interest in Phili didn’t start this winter. They moved for him in the January window, when the junior international also drew an offer from Al-Ittihad Tripoli in Libya. Stellenbosch dug in then, unwilling to lose a key attacker mid-season without time to find a replacement.

That stance has softened. Contract reality has a way of doing that.

Phili is now heading into the final year of his deal. Stellenbosch are understood to be open to a sale, wary of watching one of their prized assets walk away for nothing at the end of the campaign. The clock is ticking, and Chiefs know it.

The potential deal has another layer. Ashley du Preez is right in the middle of it.

Talks behind the scenes indicate du Preez has already agreed personal terms with Stellenbosch, but only on one condition: Phili must move in the opposite direction. It’s a transfer chain with a clear hinge point. No Phili to Naturena, no du Preez back to his old stomping ground.

That has forced Chiefs to get creative.

They are now believed to be ready to sweeten their proposal by adding another player into the package, along with a cash payment, in an effort to close the gap between the two clubs’ valuations and finally get the deal over the line. The identity of that extra player remains under wraps, but his inclusion signals intent. Chiefs are all-in on Phili.

Stellenbosch, though, hold a strong hand of their own.

Do they cash in now, bank the fee, and welcome back du Preez as a proven weapon in attack? Or do they gamble, keep Phili for one more season, and risk losing him for free once his contract runs down?

The decision cuts to the heart of squad planning in the modern game: short-term firepower versus long-term asset management.

Du Preez, signed by Chiefs from Stellies four years ago, now stands on the brink of a return that would neatly complete the circle of his career so far. But his homecoming depends entirely on Phili making the opposite journey, trading the Cape Winelands for the glare of Naturena.

For now, the move hangs in the balance. Chiefs have made their play. Stellenbosch must decide whether to deal – or double down on a star they may soon lose for nothing.
