Chelsea Target Rafael Leao at Cut-Price Offer
Chelsea have been handed an unexpected opening late in the transfer window, with AC Milan offering Portugal World Cup winger Leao to the London club at a sharply reduced price.
The 27-year-old, a mainstay in Serie A for the best part of a decade, is edging towards the exit at San Siro as Milan move to ease financial pressure. Once valued far higher, he is now understood to be available for around €40 million (£34m), a figure that would have been unthinkable not long ago for a player of his pedigree.
Milan ready to cash in
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Leao’s representatives have spent recent weeks sounding out clubs across Europe after early interest from several Premier League sides cooled. Milan initially tried to steer him toward Roma, but the Giallorossi have stepped back from negotiations, leaving the player’s camp to look elsewhere.
That search has led them to Chelsea.
With the Blues still reshaping their attack and the market entering its decisive phase, the proposal drops into their lap at a time when elite wide forwards at a discount price are rare. Milan, keen to balance their books, appear prepared to sanction a sale if a club meets the current asking price.
Arsenal and United step away
Leao’s name has already been a recurring one in this window. Arsenal pushed hardest earlier in the summer as Mikel Arteta sought to refresh his forward line after Leandro Trossard’s departure. At one stage, Leao looked a logical fit.
But Arsenal moved in a different direction. The arrival of Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge in a £34m deal has changed the picture in North London. The Greece international has hit the ground running, easing the urgency for another wide attacker.
There was a brief moment when Gabriel Martinelli’s future and an audacious enquiry for Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior opened the door for a second attacking signing. That door has now closed. Arsenal’s attention has swung firmly toward defensive reinforcements, and Leao is no longer on their active list.
Manchester United also held what was described as concrete interest when the market first opened. But the dynamics at Old Trafford have shifted. Michael Carrick’s squad is now well stocked in wide areas after last summer’s captures of Mateus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, and United have joined Arsenal in stepping away from the chase.
A winger waiting on England
Leao, for his part, has made little effort to hide where he wants his career to go next.
He has long spoken of his admiration for the Premier League and its tempo, and earlier this summer he went public about his desire for a new stage. “I need a new challenge. I already won two trophies in Italy and have been there for a while,” he said, underlining a sense that his Milan chapter is close to its final pages.
He was even more explicit about where he believes his game belongs.
“The league [Serie A] is evolving, but for my style of football, I think the Premier League or La Liga would make more of my talent, as a player. If a Premier League opportunity were to come along, I would be very happy.”
Those words now hang in the air as Chelsea weigh their options.
World Cup pedigree, cut-price fee
Leao’s résumé backs up his ambition. He featured in all five of Portugal’s matches at the World Cup under Roberto Martinez, scoring once during a campaign that ended in frustration in the last-16 against eventual champions Spain. Even in disappointment, he underlined his status as a trusted figure on the international stage.
At 27, he is entering what many view as the prime years for an attacking player. He believes he has pushed his Milan story as far as it can go, and wants to test whether his scoring and creative output can survive the jump to what is widely regarded as the most unforgiving domestic league in the game.
For Chelsea, the equation is clear: a proven international winger, still in his peak window, at a fee that has dipped to £34m. The question now is whether they move quickly enough to turn an offer on the table into a statement signing – or leave the door open for another Premier League rival to revive their interest and steal in late.
