Arsenal and Man Utd Battle for Shakhtar Starlet Elias
Arsenal’s summer has already had the feel of a champion’s reset rather than a victory lap. A 3-0 dismantling of Manchester City in the Community Shield in Cardiff underlined their authority, the countdown to their Premier League title defence is on, and the recruitment drive has not slowed.
Now they are stepping into another fight – this time with Manchester United – for one of Europe’s most talked-about young forwards.
Champions sharpen their attack
Mikel Arteta’s side open the defence of their crown at the Emirates on Friday night against newly-promoted Coventry City, a fixture they will be expected to control. The mood in North London is buoyant. Bruno Guimaraes has arrived from Newcastle United to strengthen an already formidable midfield, and the spine of the squad looks stronger than ever.
The one missing piece? A forward of genuine top-tier potential to grow with this group.
Vinicius Junior is off the table after signing a new deal at Real Madrid, but Arsenal have turned their gaze elsewhere in the Brazilian talent pool. According to TEAMTalk, the champions are now among a cluster of elite clubs tracking Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Kaua Elias Nogueira, known simply as Elias.
Elias lights up Ukraine
Shakhtar plucked Elias from Fluminense in February 2025 for £14.5m, a bold move for a player still learning the European game. It has paid off. The 20-year-old has responded with 15 goals in 49 appearances, blending raw pace with sharp movement and a ruthless streak in front of goal.
His latest audition felt like a statement. On August 3, in a 5-1 demolition of Kudrivka in the Ukrainian top flight at Arena Lviv, Elias delivered a perfect hat-trick – left foot, right foot, header – the kind of performance that gets scouts shifting in their seats and sporting directors on the phone.
Around 10 clubs were represented in the stands that day, with Arsenal and Manchester United among them. They did not leave disappointed.
Shakhtar, well used to operating as a launchpad for South American talent, value him at around £30m. The expectation from those close to the situation is clear: Elias will move either this summer or after the 2026-27 season. AC Milan and Porto are also in the frame, adding a continental edge to what could become a multi-club tug of war.
Do Arsenal or Man Utd really need him now?
That is where the story gets interesting. On pure talent, Elias fits the profile both English giants crave: young, dynamic, technically gifted, and with room to explode in value. On opportunity, the picture is more complicated.
At Arsenal, Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz already offer Arteta proven options through the middle. The champions are built on continuity and cohesion; breaking into that forward line in the short term would be a brutal task for any 20-year-old, however gifted.
Across the divide, Manchester United under Michael Carrick have their own focal point in Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenia international is expected to lead the line as United attempt to rebuild a coherent attacking identity. Again, Elias would be walking into a dressing room where the main striking role is already spoken for.
So the decision for the Brazilian is not just about badge or wage. It is about minutes. Development. The right environment at the right time.
A career-defining choice
Shakhtar can offer him status and rhythm; the step up to Arsenal, United, Milan or Porto would offer exposure, pressure, and a different level of scrutiny. For a player still shaping his game, that balance matters.
Whoever wins this race will not just be buying goals and potential resale value. They will be taking responsibility for the next phase of a career that could go in several directions from here.
Elias has already shown he can light up an afternoon in Lviv. The real question now is where he chooses to light up the European stage.
