Juventus Sign Guglielmo Vicario as New Goalkeeper

Juventus have their new No. 1 – or at least the man they hope will become it.

The Turin club confirmed on Tuesday the arrival of Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham, a deal designed to anchor the next phase of their rebuild between the posts. Vicario joins on loan until 30 June 2027, a long runway for a player entering his peak years.

French outlet Foot Mercato reported that Juventus have secured an option to buy set at around 10 million euros, bonuses included. For a 29-year-old with Premier League and European pedigree, it is a calculated gamble rather than a wild swing.

This is not the story of a wonderkid fast-tracked to the top. Born in 1996, Vicario came through the Udinese academy and took the long road: Venezia, Perugia, Cagliari, then Empoli. It was at Empoli that he truly announced himself, amassing 69 Serie A appearances and building a reputation as one of the league’s most reliable shot-stoppers.

Tottenham moved for him in 2023. London brought a different kind of pressure, but Vicario settled quickly, racking up 117 matches for Spurs and playing a key role in their Europa League triumph in the 2024/25 season. That European medal now travels with him to Turin.

The move, though, comes with a twist. Vicario was not Juventus’ first target. The club explored high-profile options, sounding out Argentina’s World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez and Japan’s Zion Suzuki before turning to the Italian. The chase was ambitious; the final choice is pragmatic.

Yet this is exactly the sort of signing that can define a cycle. A goalkeeper in his prime, hardened by Serie A, tested in Europe, now handed the gloves at a club that measures success in trophies, not in progress reports.

Juventus have made their bet. The next three seasons will reveal whether Vicario becomes just another name on their long list of keepers, or the man who owns the penalty area in Turin for years to come.
