Chelsea Rules Out Caicedo and Palestra for Luton Cup Clash

Chelsea will have to navigate their Carabao Cup second-round clash with Luton Town without two of their key midfield options, as Xabi Alonso confirmed Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra are both unavailable for Thursday night.

The pair were missing on the opening weekend of the Premier League in the 3–2 win over Fulham and will stay on the sidelines for at least one more game.

“Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it [against Luton],” Alonso said in his pre-match press conference, drawing a clear line under any late fitness hopes.

There is a hint of optimism around Caicedo’s return, though. Alonso admitted Chelsea are already eyeing the weekend league fixture as a realistic target.

“Let’s see, hopefully Moi could make it for the weekend,” he explained, before sounding a more cautious note on Palestra. “We need to check a little bit more with Marco.”

The absences will force Alonso into further early-season tweaks, but the broader picture is brighter. The rest of the group that featured on Monday is available, giving him scope to shuffle his pack without tearing it apart.

“Otherwise, everyone from Monday is okay, Cole [Palmer] is absolutely fine,” he said, easing any concerns over the playmaker after his influential display against Fulham.

There was also a nod to opportunity. Penders has been drafted into the squad and will travel with the group, a clear sign that the door is open for minutes in the cup.

“Penders is part of the squad, so he has an opportunity,” Alonso added.

Chelsea’s head coach now walks the familiar tightrope of this competition: protect key players, manage fitness, and still keep momentum rolling. With Caicedo and Palestra sidelined, Thursday night becomes an early test of the squad’s depth – and of who is ready to seize their chance.
