Chelsea Faces Key Decision on Moisés Caicedo's Fitness Ahead of Derby

Chelsea will wait until the last possible moment to decide whether Moisés Caicedo is fit enough to face the Premier League champions on Sunday, with a final call due on Saturday at Cobham.

The 24-year-old’s season has barely started and already feels stop–start. He sat out the opening league win over Fulham, then missed the midweek Carabao Cup victory against Luton Town. When he did get back on the pitch, it ended in fresh worry.

Thrown on as a 68th-minute substitute in Chelsea’s chaotic 4-3 win over Brighton & Hove Albion, Caicedo managed just 14 minutes before collapsing to the turf. Medical staff rushed on, the midfielder eventually walking off without assistance, but the fact it was a recurring problem set alarm bells ringing behind the scenes.

Alonso wary over key lieutenant

At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Alonso cut a cautious figure whenever Caicedo’s name came up. The Ecuador international was a central figure for Chelsea last season despite their slide to 10th, and his importance has only grown.

Vice-captain behind Reece James, 149 appearances already in blue since arriving from Brighton in August 2023 – Caicedo is embedded in the spine of this team, and in the dressing room hierarchy, heading into a derby that already feels significant.

“We will check tomorrow, tomorrow is the last decision for the squad on Sunday,” Alonso told reporters, refusing to commit either way. He urged calm as the medical team complete their work: “We [need to] not worry, we need to check tomorrow and take the final decision.”

For Chelsea, that decision could shape the entire feel of the afternoon.

New-look midfield after Enzo exit

This is not the same Chelsea midfield that finished last season. Enzo Fernandez has gone to Manchester City, a major departure that forced the club back into the market to rebuild the core of Alonso’s side.

Valentin Barco has arrived with promise and energy. Jordan Henderson has come in as the seasoned voice, the veteran presence to knit it all together and steady things when games start to tilt.

Alonso likes the mix.

“[We have] different qualities, personalities,” he said, outlining his options. “Valentin’s young, but he has come with great energy. We have Hendo, he has the composure, the mentality, he knows what's going on in the games. He's getting closer, closer to playing time.”

The message was clear: even if Caicedo doesn’t make it, Chelsea will not rip up the plan.

Perfect starts on the line

The stakes are obvious. Both London rivals walk into this derby with perfect league records, both determined not to blink first.

Arsenal have taken care of Coventry City and Aston Villa. Chelsea have edged past Fulham and then survived that seven-goal thriller with Brighton. Four games, four wins between them. Something has to give.

If Caicedo fails his fitness test on Saturday, Alonso will turn to the depth he has spent the summer assembling. Romeo Lavia is in the frame. Reece James offers another solution. Malo Gusto could even be asked to step inside and operate in midfield zones.

“We have Rom (Romeo Lavia), Reece (James) as well, Malo (Gusto) – he can play [in midfield],” Alonso said, underlining the tactical flexibility he believes this squad now carries.

Chelsea know exactly what is coming from the champions. The question is whether they will face them with their midfield general, or whether Alonso’s reshaped engine room will have to prove, on the biggest domestic stage, that it can live without him.
