Chelsea vs Leeds: Caicedo Out as Alonso Prioritizes Premier League

Chelsea head into Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Leeds United without Moises Caicedo once again. No smokescreen, no late test. He is not ready, Chelsea accept it, and Xabi Alonso has shut the door on any idea of rushing him back.

Caicedo missed the first two games of the season, then lasted just 14 minutes against Brighton before going off in clear discomfort. He sat out the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal and stays on the sidelines here, with the club digging in on a cautious approach. Alonso’s stance is blunt: no gamble, no repeat of what he called “the same mistake”.

The medical news offers a small consolation. The issue is not considered “longer-term”. That might soothe nerves at Cobham, but it does nothing for Chelsea’s midfield options against Leeds. Caicedo is out. So is Marco Palestra. Jordan Henderson is still unavailable with the wrist injury he picked up at the World Cup, and Emmanuel Emegha will also miss the tie.

Alonso Draws a Line

Alonso did not dance around Palestra’s situation. Chelsea rate him, but they are prepared to wait.

“He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the Premier League,” Alonso said. “He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”

The message is clear. Early-season setbacks sting, particularly for a new signing desperate to make a mark, but Chelsea are not going to bend their longer-term plans for a single cup night under the lights.

Rotation on the Cards

Saturday’s league fixture at home to Hull City carries more weight, and Alonso is expected to shuffle his pack. The Carabao Cup matters, but not more than the Premier League.

Levi Colwill, who missed the Arsenal game with a minor fitness concern, is available again and in line to return. Mike Penders could be handed the gloves, while Pep Chavarria and Valentin Barco are also pushing to come into the side as Alonso freshens things up.

The predicted XI reflects that balance between respect for the competition and an eye on the weekend:

Chelsea predicted XI vs Leeds: Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Neto; Barco, Lavia, Chavarria; Rogers, Palmer, Welbeck.

Straightforward, but Significant

The injury bulletin is brutally simple.

  • Out: Caicedo, Palestra, Henderson, Emegha.
  • Doubts: none.

Chelsea vs Leeds kicks off at 8pm BST on Wednesday, September 9 at Stamford Bridge. Caicedo remains in the stands, Alonso will rotate where he can, and Chelsea are expected to chase progression without losing sight of the league grind that follows. How much that tightrope shapes their season will be judged long after this cup tie is done.
