Chelsea Injury Update: Caicedo Out Against Hull City

Chelsea will again be without four key players when they host Hull City in the Premier League on Saturday, with Xabi Alonso confirming his injury list remains unchanged.

The news comes just days after Chelsea’s breathless Carabao Cup comeback against Leeds United, when a heavily rotated side needed big guns like Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers off the bench to turn the tie and steady the mood after the derby defeat to Arsenal.

This time, Alonso will have to manage the load without fresh reinforcements.

Caicedo ruled out, Brentford the new target

Moises Caicedo, the heartbeat of Chelsea’s midfield when fit, will not feature against Hull.

“Not yet,” Alonso said in Friday’s press conference when asked if the Ecuadorian could return at the weekend. “Let’s see for Brentford, but unluckily not at the moment to take risks with him. Not yet, we are not there yet.”

Caicedo picked up his injury before the season even began. He finally made his first appearance of the campaign in the 4-3 thriller against Brighton & Hove Albion in late August, coming on in the second half, only to suffer a setback that forced him off again. Since then, Chelsea have had to improvise in the middle of the pitch.

The temptation to rush him back is obvious. The schedule is unforgiving. But Alonso has drawn a line.

Trio of summer signings still waiting

The wait goes on for three of Chelsea’s summer arrivals as well.

Alonso gave a blunt “no” when asked if Marco Palestra, Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha would be in the squad for Hull. Pressed specifically on Henderson and Emegha, he was just as clear.

“Not tomorrow,” the Chelsea boss said. “We hope they can be (available) for Brentford, and we will see.”

Like Caicedo, Palestra suffered his injury on the eve of the season. None of the trio has made an official appearance for the club yet, a frustrating footnote to Chelsea’s recruitment drive.

There is at least a hint of progress. Palestra has started individual training, a sign he is edging closer to a return. Henderson has rejoined full sessions with the group after fracturing his left forearm during the 2026 World Cup, but the medical staff have not yet cleared him for competitive action. Emegha, too, remains on standby.

International break shapes Chelsea’s thinking

Chelsea have just two matches left before a stretched September international window, starting with Hull and then Brentford. That looming pause is shaping the club’s approach.

This break will run longer than usual, with national teams playing four games across three weeks as two international windows are merged into one. Once it ends, there will be no further break in October.

That calendar twist changes the calculation. Rather than gambling on early returns, Chelsea can use the extended layoff as a buffer, giving Caicedo, Palestra, Henderson and Emegha a cleaner runway to full fitness.

If anyone does beat the schedule, Palestra and Henderson look the closest. Both are back on the grass, both are edging towards that final green light.

For now, though, Alonso goes into another league game short-handed, juggling minutes and momentum, knowing the real reinforcements might only arrive once the season restarts after that long international pause.
