Chelsea Faces Injury Challenges Ahead of Luton Town Clash

Chelsea’s season is barely a week old, but the juggling act has already begun.

Fresh from a chaotic 3-2 win at Fulham to open their Premier League campaign, Chelsea now pivot to the Carabao Cup and a potentially awkward tie against Luton Town at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night. The problem for Alonso? Two of his key men still aren’t available.

Injury headaches before Luton

Neither Moises Caicedo nor summer signing Palestra played a single minute in the west London derby. They won’t be involved against Luton either, stripping Alonso of two major options as he tries to rotate a side that emptied the tank at Craven Cottage.

Palestra, brought in from Atalanta in the recent window, is facing an unclear recovery timeline. Caicedo is understood to be slightly closer to a return, but not close enough for Thursday.

Alonso laid out the situation after that breathless win at Fulham, explaining that both players had picked up minor issues in training and that the club refused to gamble this early in the campaign.

“During the week they had a few setbacks,” he said in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday. “With Moi – and with any [player] – we don’t want to take too much risk. They weren’t ready to play tonight.”

The message hasn’t changed ahead of Luton.

“Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it,” Alonso confirmed. “Let’s see, hopefully Moi could make it for the weekend, but we need to check a little bit more with Marco. Otherwise everyone from Monday is okay, Cole [Palmer] is absolutely fine.”

So Caicedo is aiming for the weekend’s league fixture. Palestra remains a longer wait.

Goalkeeper spotlight as Sanchez faces scrutiny

The treatment room isn’t Alonso’s only concern. The transfer market is circling.

Robert Sanchez’s performance at Fulham has come under the microscope, with reports suggesting Chelsea could move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez before the window closes. That noise has pushed backup goalkeeper Mike Penders into the conversation for a possible start against Luton.

Alonso refused to give anything away.

“Penders is part of the squad, so he has an opportunity,” he said. “We will decide and then I am giving the team tomorrow to the players, so I prefer to respect that they know first.”

The decision in goal will be one of the most closely watched calls of the night, a small but telling hint at Chelsea’s thinking ahead of deadline day.

Enzo stays locked in

While the goalkeeping situation simmers, one name is not moving – at least not on Thursday.

Enzo Fernandez is expected to feature despite persistent links with Manchester City. The 2022 World Cup winner continues to be at the centre of transfer chatter, but Alonso underlined his faith in the midfielder’s attitude and focus.

“Enzo, yes we expect him to be involved. He is training really well, he’s a good professional, and he will be involved,” the manager said.

The message was clear and repeated: Enzo plays, Enzo is committed, Enzo is important.

Long-term absentees and a delicate balance

Beyond Caicedo and Palestra, Chelsea are still without Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha. Both missed the opening-day victory and remain sidelined, though the club expects them to return to full training within the next two weeks.

That leaves Alonso walking a tightrope. He needs to keep momentum going after an opening win, progress in the Carabao Cup, and still protect a squad already carrying several knocks.

Beat Luton and Chelsea move smoothly into the next round with confidence intact. Misjudge the rotation, invite another injury, and the early weeks of the season could suddenly feel a lot heavier.
