Chadi Riad's Season Ends After ACL Injury

Crystal Palace have been rocked by the news that defender Chadi Riad has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, ruling the Morocco international out for the rest of the campaign.

Medical tests carried out this week confirmed the severity of the injury, according to the Daily Mail, after Riad was forced off on a stretcher in the 70th minute of Palace’s match against Everton. The moment he went down, the concern was immediate. The scans have now brought the worst possible outcome.

For Riad, it is a brutal setback at a crucial stage of his career. This is the second serious knee injury of the same kind he has had to endure. His first season at Selhurst Park was already disrupted by a similar problem, shortly after his £12 million move from Barcelona.

He had fought hard to move past that chapter. Last season, the narrative flipped. Riad worked his way back into the side, earned the trust of the coaching staff and forced his way into the starting XI during the run-in. The highlight came on the European stage, as he started the UEFA Conference League final and helped Palace beat Rayo Vallecano to lift the trophy.

That resurgence had fuelled big ambitions for this season. Riad arrived at the new campaign determined to cement his place and establish himself as a mainstay in the Palace backline. Instead, those plans have been ripped up in an instant.

The injury also hands Palace’s coaching staff a serious selection problem. Defensive reinforcements were already on the agenda, with Axel Disasi arriving on loan from Chelsea and the club close to securing Joel Ordóñez from Club Brugge. Now those moves take on a different weight.

What was meant to be a season of consolidation and growth for Riad has turned into another long road back. For Palace, the question is no longer how far he can push on this year, but how well they can cope without him.
