Michael Carrick Prepares for Ipswich Town Clash with Key Players Returning
Michael Carrick will be without Amad Diallo but has Mason Mount back in full training as Manchester United prepare for their first Premier League home game of the season against Ipswich Town on Sunday.
The Old Trafford fixture, a 16:30 BST kick-off, comes on the back of what Carrick called a “setback” last weekend, and the United manager made it clear he expects a response.
Baleba excitement checked by injury
Carrick’s enthusiasm for new signing Carlos Baleba was obvious. The midfielder has barely arrived and already the manager sees him as a key piece in reshaping his squad.
“We're delighted with Carlos,” Carrick said. “Massive potential. I think it's a really exciting signing for us. I think the quality that he has, the attributes that he has, that offsets a little bit of the balance of the group that we've got.”
The buzz is tempered by an early problem. Baleba has picked up what Carrick described as a “little ankle issue”, one that will sideline him for a few weeks. The manager stressed it is “no major issue”, but it does delay his integration into the team.
Both Baleba and Amad, who remains unavailable, are expected to be back in contention before next month’s international break, though Carrick refused to nail down a specific return date for either player.
Mount returns, academy talents under the spotlight
There was better news on Mason Mount, who is back training with the group and pushing towards a return to competitive action.
Carrick also took time to underline the pathway for United’s academy prospects, with JJ Gabriel and Harry Amass both very much in his thoughts.
On Gabriel, he was clear: the teenager is already part of the inner circle.
“JJ is one of the boys. He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit. He's getting experience all the time. He's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and just continuing his development.”
Amass, whose long-term future at Old Trafford remains uncertain, has also impressed Carrick despite an injury-hit end to last season.
“I've been really pleased with Harry,” Carrick said. “I think he had a really good season that didn't finish so good with the injury, but it's been great to have him around pre-season. He's done really well. So, let's see what happens.”
Ipswich test after early setback
United walk out at Old Trafford on Sunday knowing they need to hit back quickly after that opening stumble. Carrick did not shy away from the importance of the occasion.
“The first home game of the season is really one we look forward to, and the supporters coming,” he said. “I think we had a setback last week, and you want to get back to playing well and winning football matches.”
Ipswich arrive with momentum of their own after a big result last week, and Carrick expects a demanding afternoon.
“It is a tough game, Ipswich obviously had a big result last week as well. It'll be another challenge for us.”
