Calvert-Lewin Dominates as Leeds Crush Newcastle 4-1

Dominic Calvert-Lewin terrorised Newcastle United yet again as Leeds United powered to a 4-1 win at a raucous Elland Road, a statement victory that hauled them up to third in the Premier League table.

  A few early jitters with the ball at his feet, but once he settled he barely looked troubled. Produced one big moment, standing tall to deny Harvey Barnes when Newcastle briefly threatened a lifeline.
• James Justin – 7
  Picked his moments to surge forward and delivered the teasing cross that led to Leeds’ second goal. Reads this system so well now and looks nailed into this side.
• Nico Elvedi – 7
  Only his second Premier League start, yet he already looks like he’s been here for years. Calm, composed, strong in the duels. Should have scored, though, volleying wide at the back post when completely free.
• Tarik Muharemovic – 7
  August’s player of the month glided through the game. Rarely flustered, stepped in when needed and made Newcastle’s frontline look ordinary.
• Jayden Bogle – 8
  A menace. His second goal in as many league games was ultimately credited to him, even if he knew little about the final touch. Twice forced Lukas Hornicek into sharp saves before that. Constantly on the front foot and a real outlet down the right.
• Anton Stach – 7
  Set the tone immediately, winning a corner inside the first 32 seconds and dragging Leeds up the pitch. Drove the tempo in midfield, though he’ll know he should have added a goal to his night.
• Ethan Ampadu – 7
  The organiser. Barked instructions, kept the press coordinated and refused to let the intensity drop. Unlucky to see a vicious strike blocked by his own striker, Calvert-Lewin.
• Ao Tanaka – 7
  His opener took two big deflections, but he earned his luck by taking the shot on. Looks like the Tanaka of old again, sharp and confident, even if one slack pass could easily have cost a goal.
• Gabriel Gudmundsson – 7
  Played like an out-and-out winger from wing-back. Repeatedly drove at Newcastle down the left and stretched them all night.
• Noah Okafor – 8
  Cool and composed in the final third. Rolled the ball back for Tanaka to fire in the opener, then finished emphatically for Leeds’ fourth. A cutting edge to match his work rate.
• Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 9
  Lives for this fixture. Dominated Newcastle’s centre-backs physically and mentally. His trademark header led to Leeds’ second via Bogle, then he showed his composure on the deck to slide in the third. Eight goals against Newcastle now – more than he’s scored against any other club. Unplayable at times.

  Without him, this could have turned brutal. Produced strong stops to twice deny Bogle and also kept out Calvert-Lewin. Let down badly by those in front of him.
• Amar Dedic – 4
  Rushed back from a hamstring issue and it showed. Leeds repeatedly went after his side and he never really got to grips with the movement.
• Malick Thiaw – 3
  Captain in name only on this showing. Beaten too easily in the air by Calvert-Lewin for the second, then watched the striker glide past him for the third. Slapped the turf in frustration, but the damage was already done. Failed to close down Okafor for the fourth as well.
• Sven Botman – 3
  Overwhelmed. Could not live with Calvert-Lewin’s power and movement, and was turned far too easily in the build-up to Leeds’ second. A grim night.
• Lewis Hall – 4
  Dragged out of position for the second goal and never really recovered his composure. Not the way he would have wanted to celebrate signing a new deal.
• Nico Gonzalez – 5
  Took a blow to the head early on and was eventually withdrawn after just 19 minutes. Hard to judge him too harshly given the circumstances.
• Lewis Miley – 4
  Had no control in midfield as Leeds swarmed all over him. Unlucky with the heavy deflection on Tanaka’s strike, but struggled to find any rhythm on the ball.
• Jacob Murphy – 3
  Offered little protection defensively and rarely threatened going forward. In for the injured Anthony Elanga but never looked like seizing the opportunity.
• Yoane Wissa – 5
  At least tried to make things happen. Created Newcastle’s best chance and chased lost causes, but his final ball often let him down.
• Harvey Barnes – 5
  Carries a fearsome record against Leeds and came closest for Newcastle, dancing into the box before Trafford shut the door. Flashes of danger, not enough end product.
• Matias Fernandez-Pardo – 4
  A tough full debut after his £51.4m move from Lille. Starved of service as Newcastle resorted to hopeful long balls. Toiled, but rarely looked involved.

  Injected pace and direct running. Took his goal well to pull one back and offered a rare bright spark. Has surely nudged himself closer to a start.

  Made some intelligent runs and saw one effort land on the roof of the net from a tight angle. Flickers of threat without the finish.
• Tino Livramento (on 58, Dedic) – 6
  Another important step in his return from injury. Provided energy down the flank and supplied the cross for Toure’s consolation.

  A late introduction and still finding his feet after arriving from Monaco. Kept things tidy without changing the pattern.
