Bradley Barcola's Liverpool Journey Faces Early Setback
Bradley Barcola’s Liverpool start has stalled almost before it began.
The French winger, brought in this summer to add spark and speed on the left, is already facing his first setback of the season after limping off an hour into the Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid. Three games, no goals, and now time on the sidelines. It’s a harsh early twist for a player trying to make a first impression at Anfield.
Carabao Cup minutes against Tottenham would have offered a softer landing, a chance to breathe and build rhythm away from the glare of Europe. That door is shut for now.
Manager's Comments
On the eve of the third-round tie, Andoni Iraola drew a clear line: Barcola is not ready.
“He is not ready to train with the team yet. He is training on his own, but he has started to touch the ball. We want him back as soon as possible,” the Liverpool manager said, speaking to Foot Mercato. The image is easy to picture: a big signing working alone, edging forward, but still on the outside looking in.
The optimism in Iraola’s words came with a hard dose of reality.
“He still has some time to recover, and it will take a while,” he added. “With all these long-term injuries, I think Giovanni Leoni has a slight edge over him.”
That last line matters. Leoni, also returning from a lengthy lay-off, is now seen as slightly ahead in the race back to full fitness. Barcola, by contrast, remains in the slow lane, restricted to individual work and light ball contact while the team moves into the heart of a demanding schedule.
For Liverpool, it complicates early-season planning. For Barcola, it cuts into precious adaptation time: new league, new club, new expectations. Wingers live on confidence and rhythm; both are hard to build from the treatment room.
The club will not rush him. The calendar, though, will not wait.
