Benjamin Sesko's Return: Overcoming Injury and Finding Comfort at Manchester United

Benjamin Sesko walks back into the spotlight with the air of a man who has finally stopped worrying about his own body.

For months, the shin that cut short his debut campaign and wrecked his pre-season hung over him like a cloud. It was sore, unpredictable and, for a young striker trying to make his name in the Premier League, infuriating. Now, after forcing his way back into the starting XI in the Champions League and making an immediate impact, the Slovenian is convinced that chapter is closed.

“It was basically just to make sure that it doesn't get worse,” he explained of the club’s conservative approach to his comeback. The medical team slowed everything down, much to his frustration at the time. “We just need a little bit longer than usual, because if you start too early, it might appear again. And I think waiting a little bit longer was a great decision, and now it's healed, so it's perfect. It was shin.”

That shin problem didn’t come out of nowhere. It was the product of the brutal mix every Premier League forward knows too well: heavy contact and relentless intensity. Sesko traces it back to the closing weeks of last season, when a kick combined with his own physical overload pushed his body past its limit.

“I got a kick last season, but it was also a little bit of an overload from myself. So basically, that was it,” the 23-year-old said. A harsh ending to a debut year in which he still found a way to score 12 goals while learning a new league, a new country and a new kind of pressure.

The stop-start nature of that first campaign meant he never quite felt settled. New language, new rhythm, new expectations. Now, the tone is different. The goals are one thing; the comfort off the pitch might be just as important.

“Way better, especially than last season,” Sesko admitted when asked about his current mindset. “I changed a country. Everything was new for me. Now for me it's like I'm really enjoying it. I'm really happy here. I love life here. I have teammates that are perfect. I can't really complain about anything.”

The sense of belonging has been a long time coming. Manchester United had tracked him since he was a teenager, a 16-year-old prospect already drawing admiring glances from Europe’s elite. The move could have happened years earlier. It didn’t, by design.

Sesko and his camp chose the scenic route, not the shortcut: Red Bull Salzburg, then Leipzig, then Old Trafford. Each step a deliberate escalation, each league a tougher test. It was a career path built to ensure that when he finally walked into one of the game’s most demanding dressing rooms, he would be ready for the weight of the shirt.

“It was just basically the moment that we decided because I think it was important,” he said. “It would be a little bit too huge of a step for me to jump from, let’s say, Austria or Slovenia directly to Manchester United. So I just needed those steps to get better and better and I’m finally here.”

The shin has healed. The doubts have eased. The long-planned journey has reached its intended destination. Now comes the part that will define it: what he does with a fully fit season in a United shirt.
