Bardghji's ACL Tear Halts Transfer Hopes
Barcelona’s summer plans – and Roony Bardghji’s future – were ripped apart in a single training session.
The Spanish champions confirmed on Tuesday that the 20-year-old forward has torn the ACL in his right knee, a devastating repeat of the same serious injury he suffered in 2024 while at Copenhagen. He now faces surgery in the coming days and a long spell out, with any prospect of a move before the September 1 transfer deadline wiped out.
From transfer talks to operating table
Bardghji went down during training on Monday, just as his camp and Barcelona were preparing for a late-window exit. Medical tests quickly delivered the worst possible news: a complete ACL tear that will require an operation and months of rehabilitation.
The timing could hardly be crueller. The Sweden international had been gearing up for a transfer after discussions with club management made it clear he was unlikely to feature regularly this season. According to ESPN, coach Hansi Flick had been blunt with the youngster, telling him that first-team minutes would be very hard to come by at Barça in the upcoming campaign.
On that basis, Barcelona had already begun listening to offers. Interest had arrived from across Europe, including from the Premier League, and there was an expectation that talks would accelerate as the window moved into its final weeks.
Instead, everything stopped in an instant.
Protected from games, injured in training
In an effort to shield Bardghji from exactly this sort of scenario, Barcelona had left him out of the squad for Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. The logic was simple: avoid any unnecessary risk of injury before a likely transfer.
The irony is brutal. He avoided the matches, only to suffer the serious damage on the training pitch two days later.
This is the second time his right knee has betrayed him. Bardghji tore the same ligament in 2024 while at Copenhagen, an injury that already marked him out as a player fighting his way back from major setback. Barcelona still moved for him last summer, paying around €2 million to bring him to Catalonia.
In his debut season in Spain, he made 28 appearances in all competitions and scored twice. Most of those minutes came off the bench, and his path to the starting XI was already narrowing.
Competition grows, options vanish
The summer arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi were always going to squeeze Bardghji’s opportunities further. Flick’s message reflected that reality: the young winger would be on the outside looking in if he stayed.
That is why a transfer had gone from possibility to near-necessity. With the window closing on September 1, this was the moment for a clean break, a fresh start, and the regular football he craved.
The ACL tear ends that conversation. No club will move now. The door to a summer exit has been slammed shut, not by negotiations or finances, but by his own knee.
A season of recovery, not reinvention
Bardghji will undergo surgery in the coming days and then begin a long, demanding rehabilitation programme in Barcelona. Instead of using this season to relaunch his career elsewhere, he will spend it in treatment rooms and gyms, fighting to come back from a second major knee injury before his 21st birthday.
For a player once earmarked as one of Scandinavia’s brightest attacking prospects, the road ahead is suddenly steep again. His transfer plans are gone. His season is gone. What remains is the question that will define the next phase of his career: how many times can a young winger reinvent himself after his right knee has already given way twice?
