Barcelona's Selection Dilemma Ahead of Valencia Clash

Eric Garcia began the season as the starting right-back, only to see his place go to Kounde by the third match. Now, with Flick weighing up minutes and form, the door reopens slightly.

In the centre, Christensen’s situation underlines the new reality. He forced his way into the starting line-up against Elche and Rayo, despite not even appearing among the early nominations. He played his way in. Now he could just as quickly play his way out.

On the left, Espart has quietly ripped up the script. A natural right-back, he has nailed down the left-back slot, a position that many assumed belonged to Cancelo almost by default. That assumption has vanished. Espart’s performances have turned that flank into his territory.

Midfield firestorm

If the defence is unsettled, the midfield is a battleground.

Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Fermin Lopez, Marc Bernal, Rodri and Bryan Farinas all have numbers and arguments strong enough to start against Valencia. Every profile is different, every case compelling.

Flick has been flirting with the idea of thrusting Rodri into the XI from the first whistle, but the calendar is merciless. With Feyenoord on the horizon, the coach is leaning towards a more measured approach. The expectation is that Bernal and Pedri will anchor the midfield again, offering control and continuity.

Around them, the characteristics are sharply defined. Gavi brings intensity, bite, and leadership far beyond his years. Yamal doubt shakes up the attack

Up front, the competition is just as ruthless.

Lamine Yamal and Raphinha have, until now, been the constants. Both have started every match, with Yamal operating as a forward presence and Raphinha giving width and directness. That rhythm is under threat.

Yamal trained in the gym rather than on the pitch after taking a painful knock, the exact location of which Flick chose not to reveal. Doubts hang over his involvement against Valencia, and the coaching staff will not take risks with Feyenoord so close.

That opens the door for others. Gabriel Jesus brings experience and craft, but he has only just arrived and is still bedding in. His time will come, but Flick is not expected to throw him into the fire from the start just yet.

Instead, Adeyemi and Gordon stand ready. They have already shared starting roles this season, rotating on the wings and through the front line. With Yamal likely to drop out of the XI, both are expected to feature out wide, flanking Raphinha and giving Barcelona a more explosive, transitional edge.
