Barcelona Prepare Rodri for Rayo Vallecano Clash

Barcelona were back on the grass early on Saturday, sharpening up at the Joan Gamper sports city ahead of Monday night’s league clash with Rayo Vallecano at the Spotify Camp Nou. One player, though, stayed slightly apart from the main picture.

Rodri, fresh from a summer of World Cup glory with Spain, followed his own script.

The midfielder worked in the gym and then trained away from the group, sticking to the individual plan the club have mapped out for him, according to Spanish outlet Sport. It is not a setback. It is a strategy.

He made his Barcelona debut against Athletic Bilbao and immediately looked at home, leaving a strong impression despite limited time with his new teammates. Since landing in Barcelona, however, he has only joined a handful of full sessions. The medical and physiotherapy staff are carefully dosing his workload, intent on restoring his match rhythm step by measured step.

Inside the club there is no alarm over his condition, only patience. They see him as ready to contribute and central to Hansi Flick’s long-term project. But he reported back from holiday just days ago after carrying Spain to the top of the world, and nobody at Barcelona wants to burn him out in September.

The plan is simple: Rodri should be available for Flick against Rayo Vallecano, but a place in the starting XI looks unlikely. Expect a controlled reintroduction, minutes managed, impact built over weeks rather than demanded in one night.

While Rodri followed his tailored routine, the rest of the squad went through their paces on the Tito Vilanova pitch. The session kicked off at 9:30 in the morning, with Flick able to call on every fit first-team player.

Among them was Dominik Livaković, the club’s latest signing, who completed his second training session as a Barcelona player. Another small step in his own adaptation, another option for Flick as the season starts to gather speed.

Not everyone was out there. Gavi missed the session, as did long-term injury absentees Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji, a reminder that this squad, for all its depth, is still waiting on some heavyweights to return.

For now, Flick must balance the urgency of early-season points with the long game of keeping his World Cup-winning midfielder fresh. How quickly Rodri moves from managed minutes to dominant presence could shape Barcelona’s rhythm not just on Monday, but across the entire campaign.
