Aurélien Tchouaméni's Blueprint for Return to Real Madrid

Aurélien Tchouaméni’s return to Real Madrid is not a comeback. It’s a blueprint.

José Mourinho has laid out a meticulous plan for the French midfielder after a long and complicated injury layoff, resisting any temptation to rush a player he sees as central to tightening one of this Madrid side’s soft spots: the space in front of the penalty area.

A careful climb back

The steps so far have been small but deliberate.

  • Eleven minutes against Inter Milan in the Champions League a week ago.
  • Twenty-one more against Rayo Vallecano three days later.

On Tuesday, against Elche, the progression continues. According to Spanish newspaper AS, Tchouaméni will not start, but he is expected to play more than half an hour as Mourinho edges him closer to full involvement.

“He will get more minutes on the pitch, without doubt,” Mourinho said before the Elche match. “He keeps improving, becoming stronger and more confident. He will certainly play, but I will not specify the number of minutes he will play.”

No guarantees on time, but a clear promise: he will be out there, again.

Built in the gym, tested on the pitch

Behind those brief cameos lies a long, lonely grind.

AS report that Tchouaméni has spent countless hours in the gym and in physiotherapy, then moved on to cautious individual sessions on pitch number 3 at the training complex. Every drill, every sprint, every twist has been measured against one priority: no relapse.

He has not felt pain for several weeks. The body is responding. The mind is still catching up. He remains anxious, the report notes, but is trying to stay calm as he edges back into the rhythm of competition.

The coaching staff are watching everything: his movements, his reactions, his minutes. They are increasing his playing time step by step, fully aware of how tricky this injury has been.

The injury that wouldn’t go away

The problem began 73 days ago, on the eve of the World Cup round-of-16 match against Paraguay. Tchouaméni felt pain in his thigh, a warning sign that should have stopped him.

He pushed on anyway.

He later played against Spain in the semi-final, a gamble that backfired. He left the tournament injured, traded his holiday for treatment tables, and missed the start of La Liga. What should have been a showcase period became a recovery race.

That is why Real Madrid are so cautious now. No shortcuts this time.

A solution to a familiar weakness

Inside the club, the technical staff are eager to see the “discipline and control” they believe Tchouaméni can bring. His presence as a shield in front of the defence is seen as a crucial upgrade in an area this Madrid side have struggled with.

He offers balance. He offers protection. He offers exactly what Mourinho wants in that zone on the edge of the box, where Madrid have often looked vulnerable.

So the plan continues: short appearances, controlled minutes, rising confidence.

Eyes on the derby

All of it is building towards one game.

AS report that Tchouaméni has a strong chance of starting the Madrid derby against Atlético at the Wanda Metropolitano next Sunday. That is the real target, the night when the cautious recovery could turn into a full return to the spotlight.

If Mourinho’s plan holds, Tchouaméni will walk into that stadium not as a risk, but as a weapon.
