Asencio Faces Disciplinary Action at Real Madrid
At Real Madrid, the badge never really comes off. Asencio is discovering that the hard way.
Recently cleared of charges over the non-consensual distribution of an explicit video, the 23-year-old defender is again under scrutiny at the Santiago Bernabeu. This time, it is the club itself that has moved against him after a serious off-field lapse.
Real Madrid have launched internal disciplinary proceedings following Asencio’s conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol. The offence brought an eight-month driving ban and a €14,400 fine – a punishment heavy enough to make headlines, and serious enough for the club to react immediately.
José Mourinho has now stepped into the spotlight to address the situation, and he did not sugar-coat his feelings.
The Portuguese coach, never shy of setting clear lines, made it plain that Asencio’s behaviour has fallen short of what he demands from anyone wearing white.
“A Real Madrid player is a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 12 months a year,” Mourinho said on the club’s official website, drawing a clear line between private life and professional responsibility. For him, there is no separation.
“Everything you do outside your professional area continues to reflect on Real Madrid, continues to affect the prestige of a club that is untouchable. I am not happy. Everyone makes mistakes, but accumulated mistakes are something different.”
The word “accumulated” hung in the air. One cleared case, another conviction, and now a club process to come. For a young defender once talked about in terms of promise and potential, the margin for error is shrinking fast.
Yet Mourinho’s message was not purely a public dressing-down. Just as the controversy swirls around Asencio’s conduct away from the pitch, the coach pointed to a very different picture inside Valdebebas.
“I spoke with him when I arrived,” Mourinho admitted. “We talked about things from the past. Since I arrived, I haven’t spoken about situations outside Valdebebas because in Valdebebas, he is an exemplary professional.
“When he was well, no one trained more or better than him. Now that he has been injured for weeks, he is the first to arrive, the last to leave, showing extreme dedication to his recovery.”
Two versions of the same player: the model professional in the training centre, the source of trouble once he steps away from it. Mourinho has made clear which side will decide whether Asencio has a future at Real Madrid.
For now, the defender’s contribution is limited to the gym and the treatment room. A muscle problem has kept him out all season, with no appearance yet in this campaign. His only battles are with fitness tests and rehab sessions, while his team-mates fight for points and trophies.
Away from the pitch, another contest awaits. The club’s hierarchy will soon rule on the internal disciplinary case and decide how severely to respond to his drink-driving conviction. Fines, suspensions, a formal warning – all are on the table as the board weighs the damage to the club’s image against the player’s age and potential.
When the medical staff finally clear him, Asencio’s real work will begin. He will not just be trying to win back a place in the squad. He will be trying to win back trust – from Mourinho, from his team-mates, and from a club that expects its players to live the shirt, not just wear it on matchdays.
Talent and attitude on the training pitch have kept the door ajar. The question now is whether Asencio can stop adding to those “accumulated mistakes” and walk through it before it slams shut.
