Arsenal Prospect Marli Salmon Withdraws from England Under-18 Squad
Arsenal prospect Marli Salmon has been forced to step out of the spotlight just as it was beginning to find him.
The 17-year-old defender, fresh from his first senior appearance of the season in Arsenal’s 4-2 EFL Cup win over Ipswich Town last Tuesday, has withdrawn from the England Under-18 squad through injury.
Breakthrough put on hold
Salmon had been poised for another major milestone. After four caps for England Under-17s, he was named in Will Antwi’s Under-18 squad for the first time, with friendlies lined up against Colombia, Egypt and South Korea. It was a natural next step after his composed showing in the cup, a chance to test himself on the international stage against varied opposition.
That debut will have to wait. An injury, the specifics of which are currently unknown, has ruled him out of the camp and forced a reshuffle in Antwi’s plans.
Chelsea defender Gabriel Sambou has been drafted in as his replacement. Sambou, who has already represented both Poland and England at youth level, now gets the opportunity that had been earmarked for Salmon.
Arsenal watch and wait
For Arsenal, the priority now is recovery. Salmon will remain with the club to work back to fitness, with cautious optimism that the problem is not serious.
If his rehab goes smoothly, he is expected to return for the club’s Under-21 side in Premier League 2 against Sunderland on October 10. That date carries an extra layer of intrigue: Arsenal’s first team face Leeds in the Premier League on the same day. Should his progress impress, Mikel Arteta could yet decide Salmon’s next appearance comes under far brighter lights.
Rice steps back, Hincapie left out
Salmon is not the only Arsenal player stepping away from international duty.
On the same day his withdrawal was confirmed, Declan Rice pulled out of Thomas Tuchel’s senior England squad. The reasoning is understood to be load management after a relentless spell: 55 games for Arsenal last season, seven more at the World Cup, and already six starts from eight matches in the current campaign, including all five Premier League fixtures.
Arsenal’s medical and performance staff have been acutely aware of that workload. England now follow suit, giving the 27-year-old a breather in an effort to protect one of their most important players for the months ahead.
Elsewhere, defender Piero Hincapie has been left out of Ecuador’s latest squad amid concerns over his fitness, another reminder of how fine the margins are when club and country calendars collide.
For Salmon, the story is only just beginning. The question is how quickly he can turn this early setback into the next step of his rise.
