Arsenal Faces Injury Concerns Ahead of Chelsea Clash

Arsenal’s smooth start to the season has hit its first bump, and it comes just days before a London derby that already felt heavyweight.

According to reports, Bruno Guimaraes and Cristhian Mosquera were both missing from an open training session at London Colney on Thursday, throwing serious doubt over their involvement against Chelsea this weekend. No sign of either. No explanation from the club yet. Just a conspicuous gap on the grass.

Guimaraes worry grows before first big test

Guimaraes was supposed to be the statement signing of Arsenal’s summer. £75 million from Newcastle United, the new midfield anchor around whom Mikel Arteta could build another title push. Instead, his first weeks in North London have been dominated by a nagging groin problem.

That issue already kept him out of the Premier League opener against Coventry City. He returned only briefly on Monday night, a 19‑minute cameo off the bench in the 1-0 win at Aston Villa, more a toe in the water than a full plunge back into the intensity of English football.

Arteta has handled him with extreme caution since he arrived from the Magpies. Arsenal’s midfield is stacked, and the club has clearly decided not to gamble with a player they see as central to the season’s plan. But missing him for a clash of this magnitude, against Xabi Alonso’s sharp, high-tempo Chelsea, would strip some of the tactical flexibility Arteta has been carefully constructing.

Guimaraes gives Arsenal control, bite, and an extra passing lane under pressure. Without him, the structure changes. The stakes on Sunday do not.

Mosquera setback tightens defensive squeeze

If Guimaraes is a concern, Mosquera is fast becoming a headache.

The Spanish defender was forced off late in the win at Villa Park on Monday, replaced by Ezri Konsa in the 79th minute. At the time, Arteta moved quickly to calm any panic. His post-match message was reassuring, at least on the surface.

“He's fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something, and that's why we have the bench that we have, and that's why we had to bring in Ezri,” the Arsenal manager said.

That sounded like a precaution. Now, with Mosquera absent from training in the build-up to Chelsea, it feels more like the first warning sign.

If the 22-year-old is not passed fit for Sunday, the solution is obvious on paper: Konsa steps in for his full home debut at the Emirates. The £51 million signing from Aston Villa is the natural replacement, brought in precisely for this kind of situation. But slotting into a backline in front of a restless home crowd, against an unbeaten Chelsea side, is a different kind of introduction.

Depth already under strain

The defensive picture is getting crowded with problems. Jurrien Timber remains a doubt for the weekend as he continues his own recovery, while William Saliba is already out for the long term after an injury aggravated during the World Cup. The early-season comfort of “plenty of options” has quickly become a test of how deep this squad really is.

Arteta built this group to absorb setbacks. He may have to prove it sooner than expected.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea arrive at the Emirates with perfect records from their opening two Premier League games. Arsenal eased past Coventry City 3-0, then dug out a gritty 1-0 win at Aston Villa. Chelsea, under Alonso, have gone the other way: chaos and goals, edging Fulham 3-2 and Brighton 4-3 in two wild contests.

So the stage was already set: two flawless starts, two coaches with clear identities, one early marker in the title conversation.

Now the question is simple and sharp. Can Arsenal keep that perfect record intact without their £75 million conductor and with a patched-up defence against a Chelsea side that looks ready to punish any crack it finds?
