Arsenal Hit by Injuries Before Crucial Chelsea Clash
Mikel Arteta is dealing with a selection dilemma as Arsenal prepare to face Chelsea this weekend. The Gunners missed two important players during Thursday's training at London Colney, raising doubts about their readiness for the Premier League showdown at the Emirates Stadium.
Guimaraes and Mosquera Absent From Training
Both Bruno Guimaraes and Cristhian Mosquera were notably absent from Arsenal’s open session on Thursday. This absence has sparked concern over their availability, especially with the club eager to keep their perfect start to the season intact.
Guimaraes, a £75 million summer signing from Newcastle United, continues to battle a persistent groin injury. He missed Arsenal's first league game against Coventry City but returned briefly for 19 minutes off the bench in the recent win against Aston Villa.
Arteta Manages Guimaraes' Fitness Carefully
The Arsenal manager has taken a cautious approach with Guimaraes’ workload. Given the midfield options available, the club prefers to be careful with the Brazilian’s recovery. Still, losing such a key player before a vital London derby would complicate the team’s tactical setup.
Concerns Over Mosquera’s Condition
The situation with Mosquera seems more serious. The Spanish defender was substituted late in the Aston Villa match after showing signs of discomfort. Arteta initially suggested the change was just a precaution, not a serious injury.
"He’s fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something, and that’s why we have the bench that we have, and that’s why we had to bring in Ezri," said Arteta.
If Mosquera cannot play on Sunday, Ezri Konsa is expected to make his full home debut. Konsa, who joined from Aston Villa for £51 million last month, is the natural replacement in defense.
Defensive Depth Tested
Arsenal’s defensive options are stretched further with Jurrien Timber also doubtful. William Saliba remains out due to an injury worsened during the World Cup, pushing Arteta to juggle his squad early in the campaign.
