Arsenal head into EFL Cup duty on Wednesday night with something they have not enjoyed this early in a season for some time: momentum and expectation.

Timber left out as Arsenal take no chances
When the team news dropped, one name jumped out for its absence. Jurrien Timber was nowhere to be seen – not in the XI, not even on the bench.
The Dutch defender had only just rejoined the first-team group last week after a long lay-off with a groin injury, coming on as a substitute for Ben White. His return had been a quiet boost, the kind managers welcome but refuse to rush.
So his omission raised eyebrows. Had there been a setback?
According to BBC Sport, the answer is no. The decision to leave Timber out is described as precautionary, not a reaction to any fresh problem with his long-standing groin issue. Arsenal are choosing patience over risk.
It is a calculated call. Timber missed the 2026 World Cup and the club’s entire pre-season because of that same injury. Throwing him into back-to-back games at this stage, in a cup tie against lower-league opposition, would cut against the careful plan drawn up for his return. Arsenal want him available for the months that matter most, not just one night in Suffolk.
White joins growing defensive absentee list
If Timber’s absence is about caution, Ben White’s is about concern.
The defender was forced off in the first half of the 2-0 win over Sunderland with what appeared to be a muscular problem. The early indication is that it is a groin issue, though the full extent has yet to be confirmed.
For now, Arsenal will have to cope without one of their most reliable performers. White’s versatility and consistency have been central to Arteta’s defensive structure, and losing him, even briefly, tests the depth that has been carefully assembled.
He is not alone on the treatment table. William Saliba remains out, removing another pillar from the back line, while Cristhian Mosquera is also sidelined. The expectation is that Mosquera has a better chance of returning after the international break, offering some light on the horizon.
The immediate picture, though, is clear: Arsenal chase progress in the EFL Cup without three senior central defensive options fully available.
Arteta has wanted his squad to embrace the demands of fighting on multiple fronts. Nights like this, with a perfect record to protect and a trophy to chase, are exactly what he has been building towards. The question now is whether Arsenal’s early-season resilience can stretch far enough to cover the gaps at the back while the pursuit of silverware shows no sign of slowing.
