Arsenal vs Chelsea: Injury Updates Ahead of London Showdown
Mikel Arteta will send Arsenal into Sunday’s showdown with Chelsea with one eye on London bragging rights and the other on a slowly clearing injury picture.
The Premier League clash at the Emirates brings together two of only four sides still boasting 100 per cent records this season. The margins are already tight. So is Arteta’s squad.
Mosquera scare played down
Cristhian Mosquera provided the latest jolt to Arsenal nerves when he limped off during Monday night’s gritty 1-0 win at Aston Villa, replaced by Ezri Konsa after feeling his hamstring.
Arteta, though, moved quickly to calm fears that the Spanish defender could be set for a spell on the sidelines.
“He was more a precaution than anything else, so we’ll have to see tomorrow in the session how he feels,” the Arsenal manager said, confirming the 19-year-old is still being assessed.
Mosquera was not among those spotted in Thursday’s training images from London Colney, leaving his involvement against Chelsea still in the balance.
Timber edging closer
On the opposite flank, there was finally a sliver of good news.
Jurrien Timber, yet to kick a ball this season after undergoing a minor groin procedure in the summer, has reappeared on the grass and is edging towards a return that would significantly bolster Arsenal’s defensive options.
He was pictured in light training on Thursday, and Arteta hinted the Dutchman is at least in the conversation for a place in the squad this weekend.
“Yeah, he’s in really good condition at the moment. As I said, he’s been now a few weeks on the pitch and he’s been training with us now, so he’s in a good place,” Arteta explained.
An “outside chance” is all it is for now, but after weeks of waiting, that already feels like progress.
Guimaraes a doubt after fresh knock
The mood is more uncertain around Bruno Guimaraes.
The Brazilian midfielder took another knock against Villa and is again a doubt, having already missed the opening 3-0 win over Coventry City following a problem picked up in the Community Shield victory over Manchester City.
“Yeah, he had a knock against Villa in the previous game and he’s been assessed. Hopefully tomorrow he will be okay for training,” Arteta said.
Like Mosquera, Guimaraes was not seen in Thursday’s training shots, a detail that will not go unnoticed with Chelsea looming and the schedule beginning to tighten.
Saliba’s registration offers quiet optimism
At centre-back, there was a more subtle but significant development.
William Saliba has been named in both Arsenal’s 25-man Premier League squad and their Champions League list, a clear sign the club believe he can feature before January, when squads are resubmitted.
The Frenchman continues to rest a serious back issue sustained at the World Cup, and Arteta admitted the timeline remains fluid.
“Yes, we don’t really know the amount of weeks he’s going to be out because it’s about a healing process in the beginning, it’s a bit different,” he said.
“We know that we have to respect certain timings. The progression has been really positive in the last few weeks, but we need to wait and see how that one reaction will start to put a lot into it.”
No promises. But no writing-off either.
London rivals, perfect records
Arsenal and Chelsea arrive at the Emirates with identical records: two games, two wins. Early days, but the tone of a season can be set quickly in this league.
Arteta’s side dominated this fixture last term, unbeaten in four meetings across all competitions, winning three and drawing one. That recent history gives the Gunners a psychological edge, yet Sunday feels different: new season, new stakes, and two squads still working through their physical issues.
Precautions, knocks, long-term rehabs and cautious optimism — Arsenal have all of it in play going into this derby.
By the time Chelsea leave north London, the question will be whether Arteta’s thin defensive line has held firm long enough to keep that perfect record alive.
