Andros Townsend walked away from the kind of incident that usually ends careers, not warm-ups.
At Tinsulanon Stadium in Thailand, the 35-year-old former England winger was run over by a heavy pitch roller during PT Prachuap’s pre-match preparations for their Thai League 1 clash with Pattani FC – and somehow still played before the night was over.
A routine warm-up turns terrifying
The squad were going through their drills on the pitch when the mood changed in an instant.
Near the touchline, Townsend attempted an aerial backheel, the sort of light-hearted, sharp piece of skill you see a thousand times in a season. As he landed, a driven ground roller was making its way across the surface. The two paths met in the worst possible way.

Townsend joined PT Prachuap after a spell with Kanchanaburi Power and a stint in Turkey with Antalyaspor, adding another chapter to a career that has taken him across Europe and now into Southeast Asia.
The winger’s résumé remains one of the more varied among his England contemporaries: 13 caps for his country and eye-catching Premier League spells at Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Everton, and Luton Town. Now he finds himself the marquee name in a Thai League 1 side, still chasing minutes, still taking risks in training, still refusing to drift quietly into retirement.

Despite the astonishing escape, this was no harmless tumble. PT Prachuap expect Townsend to undergo further medical checks on his hip and thigh in the coming days to determine the full extent of the damage and to ensure there are no delayed complications.
The club will be cautious. A player of his profile and experience is central to their plans, and they will not want to gamble with his long-term fitness after such a freak incident.
