The former England winger, now with PT Prachuap in Thai League 1, was involved in a bizarre pre-match incident on Saturday night when he was run over by a groundstaff vehicle ahead of a fixture at Pattani.

Townsend was going through his warm-up when a member of the Pattani staff appeared to lose control of a heavy pitch roller. The machine veered into the 35-year-old, knocking him off his feet, with his left leg briefly trapped underneath before the vehicle was brought to a halt.

Remarkably, he not only escaped serious injury but later came off the bench in Prachuap’s 3-0 win, turning what could have been a horror story into one of the strangest clips of the season.

The footage quickly spread on social media, adding an unexpected chapter to the career of the ex-Tottenham and Crystal Palace winger, who has 13 England caps and now combines life in Thailand with regular punditry work for ITV.

Townsend chose to laugh it off. On Instagram, he referenced a recent post where he had contrasted a sun-soaked away day in Thailand with the famously bleak trips to Stoke’s windswept stadium.

“It turns out Stoke away wasn’t so bad after all. Swipe to see why,” he wrote on his Instagram story, leaning into the long-running joke about the Premier League’s least glamorous assignment.

One Thai social media post even dubbed him “The King of Memes in Thai League history.” Townsend’s response was simple and perfectly on brand: “trust me” – followed by four laughing emojis.
