Alonso Acknowledges Caicedo Mistake After Chelsea's Loss to Arsenal

Chelsea walked off the Stamford Bridge pitch beaten 2-1 by Arsenal and still without one of their most important players. The result hurt. So did the admission that followed.

Alonso, fronting up after the game, accepted he had got it wrong with Moisés Caicedo.

The Ecuadorian midfielder, already short of minutes this season, had been missing again for this London derby. He had sat out the Premier League opener against Fulham and the League Cup win over Luton Town, then finally re-emerged in the dramatic victory over Brighton.

That return was supposed to be a turning point. It became another problem.

Sent on in the 68th minute for Pedro Neto, Caicedo lasted barely a quarter of an hour. Fourteen minutes after stepping back into the action, he was hobbling off, replaced by summer signing Valentin Barco. Any hope of using that cameo to build rhythm vanished in an instant. So did his chances of facing Arsenal.

The knock ruled him out of Sunday’s clash completely, and Alonso did not hide from his role in that outcome.

“It is not longer term but it’s about assessing the risk,” he said, as quoted by Metro. “Probably, last week, we took him too early and I don’t want to make the same mistake again.”

That line cut through the usual post-match noise. A manager admitting he rushed a key player back, then paying for it in the very next fixture.

Chelsea could have done with Caicedo’s control and bite in midfield against an Arsenal side that grew into the contest and overturned the deficit. Yet Alonso refused to lean on the injury list as a shield.

“It’s easy after defeats to talk about the players that you are missing,” he insisted. “I’m not going to go there, I am happy with the players that we have.

“For sure all the managers need to deal with injuries, with suspensions. To have all the players available for all the games is impossible. But we need [Caicedo and Colwill] because they are top players and with them we are a better team.”

That is the balance he now has to strike: protecting his best players while trying to steady a side still searching for consistency.

The schedule will not wait. After the sting of losing to Arsenal, Chelsea are straight back into knockout football, with Leeds United visiting in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Caicedo’s status for that tie hangs in the air. Alonso’s own words point to extreme caution this time. Chelsea need him back. The question is whether they can afford even the slightest risk again so early in a season that already feels finely poised.
