Al-Nassr Faces Setback as Rakan Al-Ghamdi Injured
Al-Nassr’s return to Roshn League action has been jolted by a piece of news they could have done without. One of their most promising young players is out for several weeks, and his absence hurts two teams at once.
Medical tests have confirmed that 21-year-old Rakan Al-Ghamdi has suffered a sprained knee ligament along with cartilage bruising. The diagnosis means he is expected to miss between four and six weeks, a crucial stretch in both his development and the club’s season.
The timing could hardly be worse. Al-Ghamdi had just begun to break into the first team, catching the eye of Australian coach Ange Postecoglou, who rewarded him with a debut in the AFC Champions League Elite. He came on in the second half against UAE side Al-Ain in the opening round of the competition, a night that ended in a heavy 4-0 defeat for Al-Nassr but still marked a personal milestone for the youngster.
That step up now hits an abrupt pause.
Blow to first team and U-21s
The damage is not confined to the senior squad. Al-Ghamdi has also been a key piece for Al-Nassr’s under-21 side, and it was with them that the injury struck. He picked it up in the final training session before their Joy League Elite clash with Damac last Friday.
Al-Nassr’s youngsters went on to win that game 1-0, but the victory came at a cost. They lost a player who had been central to their plans at a stage of the season when every available body matters.
So the club now faces a double blow: the first team loses a fresh option just as he was edging into Postecoglou’s plans, and the U-21s lose a regular at a decisive point in their own campaign. With the medical team projecting at least a month on the sidelines, possibly more, the impact stretches well beyond a single fixture list.
Pressure building ahead of league resumption
The senior squad are due back in training on Monday evening, after being granted a short break following their Asian assignment. When they regroup, the coaching staff will be forced to redraw plans that had begun to include Al-Ghamdi more prominently.
Al-Nassr resume their Roshn League campaign on 9 October at Al-Awwal Park, where they face Al-Diriyah in the eighth round. They currently sit third in the table on 16 points, just two behind leaders Al-Hilal, and every selection decision is starting to carry extra weight.
Al-Ghamdi’s injury strips Postecoglou of a flexible option who had been contributing to both squads, and it adds another layer to the technical headaches in a period packed with crucial matches.
For the player, it halts momentum at the very moment he had stepped onto the biggest stage of his young career. For Al-Nassr, it poses a sharper question: with the title race tightening and squad depth tested early, who steps up next?
