Al-Nassr Faces Al-Khaleej Without Key Players
Al-Nassr head to Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium chasing points, but without some of their biggest weapons.
The Saudi Roshn League high-flyers face Al-Khaleej in the seventh round with Australian coach Ange Postecoglou forced into major changes. According to Saudi newspaper "Arriyadiyah", the French trio Kingsley Coman, Ayman Yahya and Abdulrahman Ghareeb have all been left out of the squad for Saturday’s clash.
It is a brutal injury list at a busy moment in the season.
Coman ruled out, Al-Ain in the balance
Coman’s absence is the headline. The French winger is struggling with hamstring pain, and the technical staff have decided not to take any risks against Al-Khaleej. With muscle issues, one wrong decision can cost weeks, not days.
He will undergo further medical tests after the match to gauge the extent of the problem and to assess his chances of featuring in the upcoming continental meeting with Al-Ain of the UAE.
That game looms large. Next Tuesday, Al-Nassr travel to Hazza bin Zayed Stadium, and the staff are hoping the examinations clear Coman to return quickly. For now, though, they must plan as if he will not be there.
Yahya and Ghareeb deepen the crisis
The problems do not end with Coman.
Ayman Yahya is also unavailable, sidelined by an adductor muscle injury. His condition rules him out of both the Al-Khaleej tie and the Al-Ain fixture, removing another attacking option from Postecoglou’s arsenal at a time when rotation would have been invaluable.
Abdulrahman Ghareeb joins the list with a metatarsal injury. Losing a creative wide player of his profile strips Al-Nassr of yet more variety in the final third, leaving the coach to piece together a solution from a depleted squad.
Postecoglou now walks into a league match that matters, armed with fewer tools than he would like.
Al-Nassr flying, Al-Khaleej scrambling
All of this comes as Al-Nassr try to keep their early-season surge alive.
They have banked 15 points from the opening six rounds of the Saudi Roshn League, winning five and losing only once — a 2-1 defeat to Al-Ittihad. That form has them sitting fourth in the table, very much in the thick of the title conversation and intent on piling pressure on the sides above them.
Al-Khaleej stand in their way but arrive from the opposite end of the spectrum. Their start has been rough. Just 4 points so far, and thirteenth place to show for it, underlines the struggle.
On paper, it is contender versus struggler. On the pitch, with Coman, Yahya and Ghareeb all missing, it becomes a test of Al-Nassr’s depth and Postecoglou’s resourcefulness.
Can a weakened squad keep the pace of a title charge while juggling continental ambitions? The answer may start to emerge under the lights at Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium.
