Paris Saint-Germain are staring at a critical few days in the Yan Diomande saga, with the French champions wavering over RB Leipzig’s asking price and Liverpool suddenly sensing a way back into a race they thought was lost.

For months, Liverpool had done the hard yards. With Mohamed Salah gone after nine glittering years at Anfield, the club identified Diomande early as the statement winger to reshape their attack. Contacts with the teenager’s camp began as far back as December, with Liverpool officials speaking to his representatives on an almost daily basis as they laid the groundwork for a summer move.

Four weeks on from Diomande signalling his preference for PSG, there is still no agreement between the clubs. In Germany, reports now talk of a potential “fiasco” for the Ligue 1 side, with the deal at risk of collapsing under the weight of its own numbers.

The dispute is simple: money.

Leipzig, consistent with their stance all summer, want a record fee for the 19-year-old. Their preference, made clear from the outset, is to keep Diomande for at least one more season and sell from a position of even greater strength. According to Bild, they have set a compromise figure at €120m (£102.5m, $136.5m) as the minimum to sanction his departure.

For PSG, that number is a problem.

Luis Enrique admires Diomande. He likes the player, likes the profile, and sees the upside. But he does not see €120m worth of guaranteed impact in a squad already overloaded with attacking options. The coach has reportedly told sporting advisor Luis Campos that he cannot justify such an outlay on a teenager he cannot promise regular minutes to.

Enrique would welcome Diomande. Just not at Leipzig’s price.

Leipzig, for their part, are unmoved. They insist he will not be sold for a penny less than their valuation, even though they know what it means to keep a player who has already mentally stepped towards the exit. Tension and friction are the obvious risks, yet the Bundesliga club are prepared to hold their ground.

So the stand-off drags on. PSG are prepared to wait, hoping Leipzig blink. Leipzig are prepared to wait, convinced PSG will eventually pay or walk away. In the middle sits a 19-year-old who thought his future would be settled by now.

Diomande camp ramps up the pressure

Diomande’s entourage is growing increasingly frustrated with the delays. They expected a deal to be wrapped up weeks ago. Instead, they are now preparing to lean harder on the situation, with powerful agency Roc Nation ready to increase the pressure on all sides to find a solution.

Timing is not on their side. After a short holiday following his World Cup campaign with Ivory Coast, Diomande is due back at Leipzig’s training complex next week. The longer he trains under Marco Rose with no agreement in place, the more this begins to resemble a familiar Leipzig story.

The comparison in Germany is Xavi Simons. He wanted to leave Leipzig in 2024, but the club’s steep demands scared off suitors. Only a year later did a move materialise, with Tottenham Hotspur eventually striking a deal at a lower price. Leipzig know this playbook. So do the agents watching from the outside.

This time, though, there is another twist: Liverpool.

Liverpool watch and wait

When Diomande turned his focus to PSG, Liverpool were left on the outside, their early work seemingly wasted. An initial offer had already been rejected, and the player’s preference appeared decisive.

The landscape has shifted again.

If the PSG move breaks down, Liverpool are ready. The club would have no issue matching the £102.5m valuation if the door reopens, with the winger still viewed as a marquee solution to the post-Salah era. For a recruitment team that prides itself on timing and opportunity, this stalemate in Paris looks increasingly interesting.

Arsenal and Manchester City are also monitoring the situation, both linked with potential hijack attempts, though nothing suggests they have gone as far as Liverpool did in their early pursuit.
