Why Cristiano Ronaldo Is Missing from Portugal’s Lineup Against Norway

Jorge Jesus has had an impressive start as Portugal’s manager, steering the team to three straight wins. His tenure began with a tight victory over Wales and continued with wins away against Norway and Denmark. At the moment, Portugal leads its UEFA Nations League group with full points.

Yet, not everything has gone smoothly. The absence of Cristiano Ronaldo during this international break has sparked plenty of debate. The 41-year-old striker will miss Portugal’s upcoming match versus Norway on Sunday once more.

What’s Behind Ronaldo’s Absence?

Ronaldo’s reaction to being sidelined stirred up controversy. Known for his fiery personality, he was visibly upset after being benched in the previous game against Norway, a match managed by Jesus, who also coached him at Al Nassr.

After a poor showing against Wales where Ronaldo was substituted early, Jesus chose to keep him on the bench for the following fixture in Oslo. Despite promises that Ronaldo would get some playtime, he did not step onto the pitch during the 2–1 win.

With Portugal holding a slim lead, Jesus decided not to risk changing the lineup late in the game. He stated firmly, "I can promise whatever I want, I’m the coach. No player will ever make a decision for me." This only fueled Ronaldo’s frustration.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner left the Portugal squad abruptly, ruling himself out for their 4–2 victory over Denmark and the upcoming home game against Norway.

"After the press conference of the National Team coach, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the National Team camp," Ronaldo announced on social media."In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to.Now it’s time to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception."

The absence of Ronaldo against a Norway side led by Erling Haaland keeps the spotlight on his future with the national team.

Fans Rally Behind Ronaldo

Given Ronaldo’s 23 years of commitment to Portugal and his legendary status, many fans have jumped to his defense. Billboards have appeared around Lisbon and surrounding areas expressing gratitude and support.

  • Message on billboards: "Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo for everything you’ve done for Portugal. You will always be our captain. Portugal is always with you."
  • Criticism directed at Jesus: Accusations of "mistreating" Ronaldo and having an "inflated ego."

This ongoing saga poses challenges for the Portuguese Football Federation as tensions remain high.
