World Cup Day 5 Highlights and Day 6 Match Preview
Day 5 Recap: A Day of Draws
The World Cup continued with an unusual twist on Monday as all four matches ended in draws. No winners, no losers – just points shared. Yet, each game had its own excitement, from Cape Verde’s impressive defensive display against Spain to the intense late-night battle between Iran and New Zealand. It might seem boring at first glance, but every team walked away with something valuable.
Spain 0-0 Cape Verde (Group H)
No goals were scored, but Cape Verde’s defensive performance was extraordinary. The Blue Sharks absorbed 74% possession from the football giants Spain and lost the expected goals (xG) battle 2.16 to 0.28. Still, they defended with relentless determination, committing only one foul throughout the match. This result stands out as one of the biggest surprises so far and increases the chance of a Spain vs. Argentina clash in the Round of 16. Maybe scoreless draws aren’t so bad after all.
Belgium 1-1 Egypt (Group G)
Belgium’s squad looked less dominant than usual, facing tough resistance from Mohamed Salah’s Egypt. Emam Ashour opened the scoring for Egypt with a stunning goal in the 19th minute. Belgium leveled the score thanks to an own goal by Hany in the 66th minute. Romelu Lukaku was physically imposing and instrumental in pressuring Egypt’s defense. Either Belgium or Egypt will probably top Group G, but it remains uncertain who.
Saudi Arabia 1-1 Uruguay (Group H)
This match was rough, featuring plenty of hard tackles and moments where the referee struggled to maintain control. Saudi Arabia scored first through Al Amri in the 41st minute, but Uruguay responded with a goal from Araújo in the 80th. Both teams earned a fair share of points, though Uruguay did not look as sharp as expected. Rodrigo Bentancur was active but didn’t influence the outcome significantly. With Spain and Cape Verde also drawing, all Group H teams now sit on one point.
Iran 2-2 New Zealand (Group G)
Perhaps the most entertaining game of the day took place at SoFi Stadium, packed with passionate Iranian supporters and some Mexican fans cheering for Iran. Despite their league's cancellation earlier this year and an aging squad, Iran fought hard against a determined New Zealand team seeking their first World Cup win. Chris Wood is New Zealand’s star striker, but Elijah Just stole the spotlight by scoring twice, tying him for the Golden Boot lead. Iran matched those goals twice and nearly won late on. The match lacked polish but delivered plenty of thrills for late-night viewers.
