William Saliba's Back Surgery: A Major Blow for Arsenal
William Saliba’s season has been brutally cut short.
The Arsenal defender is set to undergo back surgery, according to reports from both L’Équipe and The Athletic, in a major blow for club and country.
The problem forced him off in France’s semi-final against Spain, where he was substituted after struggling with severe discomfort. The issue was not new. French journalist Julien Laurens reported that during the tournament Saliba admitted his back was “completely done for” and that he had already been playing through the pain with strong painkillers.
This is not the image Arsenal fans are used to: their commanding centre-back, usually so assured and unflappable, reduced to managing his body rather than marshalling a back line. The decision to opt for surgery underlines the seriousness of the situation.
The expected recovery time is stark. Saliba is likely to be sidelined for four to five months, which would rule him out for the remainder of the calendar year. If that timetable holds, he will not pull on an Arsenal shirt again until 2027.
For Mikel Arteta, who has built so much of his defensive structure around Saliba’s presence, it is a harsh reminder of how quickly a season’s plans can be torn up. For Saliba, it is something else entirely: a race not just to return, but to come back as the same dominant force he has become in north London.
