Inter Signs Spence Until 2031: Key Move for Right Flank
Inter have made a statement down their right side, tying Spence to a long-term deal and prising him away from Tottenham Hotspur in one of the headline moves of their summer. The 26-year-old has signed a contract at San Siro running until June 2031, committing the prime of his career to the Nerazzurri.
The deal is substantial. After clearing his medicals with both Inter and CONI, Spence agreed terms worth a reported €2.5 million per season, with performance bonuses on top. Tottenham receive €31.5 million up front, with a further €3.5 million in add-ons linked to targets and appearances.
For Inter, this is not a gamble. It is the culmination of a long look at a player they already know. Spence returns to Italy after a sharp, six-month loan spell at Genoa in 2024, a stint that convinced the club’s hierarchy he could handle Cristian Chivu’s high-intensity, wing-back driven system.
He brings something coaches crave: options. Comfortable on both flanks as a wing-back, Spence offers elite tactical flexibility, allowing Chivu to rotate, flip sides, or adjust shapes without losing thrust in wide areas.
His reputation has accelerated on the international stage. During the 2026 World Cup in North America, Spence became a cornerstone for the Three Lions, playing in all eight of England’s matches. He started the semifinal defeat to Argentina and then the third-place playoff win over France, underlining his status as a big-tournament defender rather than a squad filler.
Tottenham, though, are not losing an unknown quantity. Spence leaves Spurs after 85 appearances, a tally that tells the story of a player who had to fight his way into relevance after arriving from Middlesbrough in July 2022 for an initial £19 million. That journey now branches off to Serie A, just as his stock is at its highest.
Spurs have paved the way for his exit with a move of their own. The London club have brought in veteran full-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer from Liverpool, banking on his experience and leadership to steady the left side of their defence and reshape the full-back hierarchy.
For Inter, Spence is not an isolated piece. He becomes the second England international to land at San Siro this summer, following defender John Stones, who joined on a free from Manchester City. Two proven Premier League and World Cup performers, one backline being rebuilt in Chivu’s image.
The timing is clear. Inter’s Serie A campaign opens at home to Monza on August 22. By then, Spence is expected to be fully embedded, another weapon in a squad that suddenly looks far more English, and far more dangerous, down the flanks.
