West Ham United Sign Joel Piroe on Loan from Leeds United

West Ham United have moved to sharpen their attack with the signing of Joel Piroe from Leeds United on a season-long loan, complete with an obligation to buy in the summer of 2027.

The deal brings in a striker who has long been a menace in the Championship. Piroe, 27, has racked up 73 goals in England’s second tier across four seasons, first terrorising defences with Swansea City before leading the line for Leeds. He finished as Leeds’ top scorer in the 2024-25 campaign, driving their title win and promotion push with the kind of penalty-box instinct West Ham have been craving.

The step up last season, though, told a different story. Piroe failed to score in 16 Premier League appearances for Leeds, a barren run that underlined the gap between his dominance in the Championship and the demands of the top flight. West Ham are betting that run was a blip, not a ceiling.

Piroe, speaking to West Ham’s website, framed the move as a personal test as much as a transfer. “I think it's a good opportunity for me to show what I've learned and how I've grown as a football player over the years,” he said, sounding like a forward who knows this next spell will define his reputation in England.

Born in the Netherlands but now a Suriname international, Piroe’s path to the Premier League has wound through some serious footballing schools. He came through at PSV Eindhoven, spent time on loan at Sparta Rotterdam, and only truly exploded in front of goal once he crossed the Channel. In the Championship he became a ruthless finisher, comfortable dropping off the front line or attacking the box late, a profile that should fit neatly into West Ham’s attacking patterns.

West Ham have kept the finer details under wraps. The club have not disclosed the transfer fee agreed for the 2027 obligation, nor the length of the contract Piroe is expected to sign once the permanent move triggers. What is clear is that this is not a short-term punt. The structure of the deal signals faith that he can translate his second-tier numbers into top-flight returns.

His arrival continues a busy window in east London. Piroe becomes West Ham’s fifth permanent addition of the summer, joining Venezuela midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman, Israel winger Manor Solomon and Belgium midfielder Arne Engels. It is a rebuild with a clear spine: energy in midfield, experience at the back, and now a proven finisher desperate to prove he belongs at the highest level.

The question now is simple: can Joel Piroe turn Championship dominance into Premier League goals when it matters most for West Ham?
