Joël Piroe Joins West Ham United on Loan for Championship Push

Joël Piroe has left Leeds United on loan, joining West Ham United for the rest of the 2026/27 Sky Bet Championship campaign, as the London club chases an immediate return to the Premier League.

The move takes one of the Championship’s most reliable goalscorers back into a promotion dogfight. Piroe, now 27, arrived at Elland Road from Swansea City in August 2023 on the back of a 19-goal season in South Wales, and he wasted no time justifying the fee or the faith.

Thrown straight in against Ipswich Town just two days after signing, the Surinamese striker marked his Leeds debut with a goal, an early sign of the penalty-box instinct that would define his stay under Daniel Farke. That first campaign produced 16 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions, a steady return as Leeds rebuilt in the second tier.

The real statement came a year later. In his second season, Piroe hit 19 goals in 48 outings as Leeds were crowned champions and marched back into the Premier League. His tally secured the Golden Boot, underlining his status as one of the division’s most clinical finishers and etching his name into a promotion story the club had desperately needed.

Now he swaps Elland Road for the London Stadium, stepping into a West Ham side still stung by relegation but built to challenge at the top end of the Championship. They need goals. He provides them. It is that simple.

Leeds, who confirmed the deal on Tuesday, stressed their well-wishes for Piroe as he heads south, with the club publicly thanking him and wishing him the best of luck at West Ham.

West Ham get a proven Championship striker with a recent title and Golden Boot on his CV. Piroe gets another crack at dragging a club back into the Premier League. The stakes, for both, could hardly be clearer.
