WBC Mandates Lightweight Title Fight Between William Zepeda and Jadier Herrera

The World Boxing Council (WBC) has ordered a unification match between reigning lightweight champion William Zepeda and interim titleholder Jadier Herrera. Both fighters have until October 20th to finalize an agreement for the bout.

Background on the Lightweight Titles

With Shakur Stevenson moving up in weight to challenge Teofimo Lopez for the super lightweight crown, Herrera (18-0, 16 KOs) earned the chance to fight for the interim lightweight belt against veteran Ricardo Nunez. Herrera dominated that fight, forcing a stoppage against the seasoned opponent.

Meanwhile, the WBC stripped Stevenson due to unpaid sanctioning fees. Instead of promoting Herrera outright or setting him up for a vacant title bout, the organization allowed William Zepeda (34-1, 27 KOs) to claim the full lightweight championship by defeating Lamont Roach Jr. this past August.

What Lies Ahead for Zepeda and Herrera

Zepeda is considered a tough competitor in the lightweight division following Stevenson's departure. Despite a less impressive record, including a loss by disqualification to Jon Fernandez, Zepeda managed to secure the title with a win over Roach. Both Zepeda and promoter Frank Warren are eager for the unification bout to happen.

The likely scenario points to Herrera finally getting his opportunity to face the full champion. Unless Zepeda pursues a unification fight with Abdullah Mason or opts to vacate the title, the matchup with Herrera appears set.
