Wales Withdraws Support for Gianni Infantino's FIFA Re-election

The Football Association of Wales has dramatically withdrawn its backing for Gianni Infantino’s re‑election as Fifa president, a sharp rebuke triggered by his failed attempt to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors.

Infantino, under pressure from across the game, scrapped the controversial plan last week after three confederations rejected it. The damage, though, has not gone away. His decade-long spell in charge of world football is now facing its most searching examination yet.

Political pressure has also intensified. The UK prime minister, Andy Burnham, publicly branded Infantino the “wrong man” to lead Fifa on Friday, while England’s Football Association demanded a “full and robust review” of his leadership.

Into that storm stepped Wales. In a strongly worded statement, the FAW confirmed it no longer supports the Swiss official’s bid to stay in office for the 2027–2031 term, becoming the first national association to formally break ranks.

“The Football Association of Wales hereby confirms its withdrawal of support for the candidature of Mr Gianni Infantino, for re-election as Fifa president for the 2027–2031 term,” the statement read.

It did not stop there. The FAW cited “recent failures in good governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgement” and said those shortcomings had “led us to a position where Mr Infantino has lost the confidence of the FAW to remain at the helm of world football”.

The conclusion was blunt and pointed straight at the heart of Fifa’s mission. “Failing to put the best interests of football first is a failure we cannot accept.”

Infantino is due to stand for re‑election in March next year. With Wales now openly breaking away and England calling for deep scrutiny, the question is no longer whether his leadership is under pressure, but how many more associations are prepared to say so out loud.
