Vinicius Junior's Challenges at Real Madrid Amid Arsenal's Interest
Vinicius Junior has been the center of attention at Real Madrid recently, with growing concerns about his contract as it enters its final year. Although Arsenal has shown interest, no formal offer has been made yet, leaving negotiations stuck between the player’s demands and the club’s proposals.
Since 2024, Vinicius has sought to extend his deal, but a major gap in salary expectations remains the main hurdle. Sources reveal he wants roughly 25.5 million euros annually, which includes a loyalty bonus for his years at the club since 2018. This figure closely matches an offer reportedly made by Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, backed by the Public Investment Fund, valuing him at 170 million euros over five seasons.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid is only willing to offer about two-thirds of that amount, around 17 million euros per year. His current salary is near 15.3 million euros. Talks have stalled since Xabi Alonso took charge, but Arsenal’s interest might push the situation forward soon.
If no extension is agreed upon by January 2027, Vinicius could sign a pre-contract with any club willing to meet his terms, potentially leaving Real Madrid on a free transfer. This financial discrepancy represents a critical dilemma for the forward.
New Manager Brings Uncertain Relationship
The arrival of Jose Mourinho introduces another challenge for Vinicius. Since Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure, the Brazilian has struggled to find strong rapport with his coaches. Under Xabi Alonso, tensions flared, including a visible clash during a LaLiga match against Barcelona. Vinicius improved under Arbeloa, but instability within the squad overshadowed progress, leading to Arbeloa’s departure.
Mourinho’s history with Vinicius is complicated. When managing Benfica last season, Mourinho defended an opponent accused of racially abusing Vinicius during a Champions League playoff. Mourinho claimed the insult was homophobic, not racist, and his comments sparked controversy. Both Kylian Mbappe and teammates Jude Bellingham and Fede Valverde supported Vinicius at that time. The incident led to FIFA adopting the 'Vinicius Junior Law' for this World Cup, allowing immediate sending off for players who cover their mouths while verbally abusing opponents.
Mourinho and Vinicius even argued during the match, and Mourinho was sent off, missing the second leg. This past conflict adds tension to their new working relationship, despite reports Mourinho intends to give Vinicius a key role.
Finding His Role in a Changing Squad
After Brazil’s exit in the World Cup round of 16 against Norway, Vinicius returns to training with confidence from his performances, but his position at Real Madrid faces challenges. The signing of Mbappe has shifted attacking dynamics, reducing Vinicius’s central prominence. Under Alonso, he played as a fixed striker and his starting place was questioned. With Arbeloa, he regained form and scored 22 goals, but his best displays come when given freedom to roam and orchestrate attacks.
The big question for the upcoming season is how Mourinho will balance Mbappe and Vinicius in the lineup. Additionally, the squad's composition is in flux; Rodrygo’s absence early on and the potential arrival of Yan Diomande, the Ivory Coast forward from RB Leipzig, add more variables. Diomande might be used on the left wing if Vinicius leaves or if his contract issues remain unresolved.
