Vinicius Jr Stays at Real Madrid After Contract Renewal
Vinicius Jr has closed the door on Arsenal and nailed his colours firmly to the Real Madrid mast.
After talks in Spain on Wednesday, the Brazil forward agreed an improved contract with the European champions, according to The Athletic, ending any realistic prospect of a blockbuster move to north London this summer.
For Arsenal, it is the one that got away. For Madrid, it is the renewal they simply could not afford to lose.
Madrid pay up to keep their star
Vinicius, 26, had entered the final year of his existing deal, worth around €17.5 million a season and due to expire next summer. Negotiations over an extension had dragged, with the player pushing hard for a package that reflected his status as one of the club’s attacking centrepieces.
He was said to be seeking roughly €30m a year and improved terms on his image rights. Reports in Spain now indicate a compromise has been struck at around €25m per season, a figure that underlines just how central Madrid view him to their current project.
The new proposal, discussed on Wednesday, was framed around his importance to the club’s future. Madrid made it clear: this is your team as much as anyone’s. In the end, that message, backed by a substantial pay rise, proved enough.
Arsenal’s big swing that never came
Arsenal had been watching the situation closely and with genuine intent. The Athletic report that Vinicius was open to the idea of joining the Premier League side if talks with Madrid collapsed.
The Gunners had identified him as a leading attacking target and were prepared to make a significant move had the stalemate continued. This was not a speculative enquiry. It was a calculated plan: if the door opened, they would go through it with force.
That door has now been slammed shut.
With Madrid and Vinicius back in alignment, Arsenal have been forced to pivot. The club are understood to have already moved on from the pursuit, switching attention to alternative options in the market.
Arteta’s attack rebuild continues
Mikel Arteta still wants more firepower. A versatile left-sided forward remains the priority before the transfer window closes, and Arsenal’s recruitment team have been working through a shortlist for weeks.
The Daily Mail report that the club have been monitoring several attacking options while maintaining their interest in Vinicius, hoping to tempt him if Madrid talks broke down. That leverage has gone, but the need for another forward has not.
One major piece of business is close. Bruno Guimaraes is set to be announced as Arsenal’s fourth signing of the summer, a significant addition in midfield that will allow Arteta to fully turn his attention to the front line.
