Unai Emery Names PSG Favorites Ahead of UEFA Super Cup Clash with Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has shifted the spotlight onto Paris Saint-Germain before their UEFA Super Cup meeting on Wednesday. The Midlands club is set for its first appearance in this event since 1982, following their dramatic victory in the Europa League last season. Emery insists that the Champions League holders, PSG, are the obvious favorites for the contest.

Emery Places Pressure on Former Club

At a pre-match press conference, Emery made it clear he expects Paris Saint-Germain to carry the burden of expectation. The French side secured their place in this match by winning the Champions League, and Emery said his team will prepare knowing that PSG feel favored.

"We are going to try to get the message across to the dressing room, preparing for the match knowing that they feel like favorites. Because of course they are," Emery said.

Emery reflects on Villa's rise under his leadership as remarkable, while PSG aim to confirm their dominance in European football. He also recalled their Champions League quarter-final clash two years ago when, despite losing, Villa showed they could challenge the French giants.

Villa Faces Key Absences Ahead of Showpiece

Preparation has been complicated for Aston Villa due to the absence of several important players. Emery confirmed that Emi Martinez, Ezri Konsa, and Ollie Watkins missed the trip to Salzburg because of their international commitments during the summer.

"They finished the season on July 19 and I have given them four weeks of vacation, I think it is completely necessary," Emery explained, defending the extended rest.

The squad depth will be tested further with summer signing Manzambi sidelined by injury. On a positive note, the club received a multi-million-pound payout for qualifying for the UEFA Super Cup, which could influence their activity in the final days of the transfer window. Emery also mentioned ongoing interest in Joao Palhinha, though without confirming details.

PSG’s Luis Enrique Frustrated by Player Availability

PSG coach Luis Enrique voiced his frustrations over the team's preparation difficulties caused by late returns from the World Cup. He complained about not having his full squad ready in time, making it hard to judge player fitness and stamina for the upcoming match.

"I do not have players. Some players returned on Monday, and others returned last week," Enrique said during his media briefing.

He added that last season was exceptional, and this one poses similar challenges. Managing player minutes is tricky, but the goal remains to perform at the highest level possible.

High Stakes in Salzburg

The game in Salzburg offers a big test for both clubs. For Aston Villa, it's a chance to show their Europa League success wasn't a one-off and prove they belong among Europe’s elite. Emery is confident that his younger players and the momentum they've built can help close the gap.

"We prepare for the match with the players we started with four weeks ago, also with the young players," Emery added.

Despite his issues with squad selection, Enrique recognizes the prestige of the tournament and the challenge Villa poses. He emphasized the importance of winning a European title and looks forward to seeing what kind of contest the teams will produce.
