UEFA Introduces Swiss Format for European Qualifiers and Nations League
International football is entering a new era as UEFA prepares to approve a major overhaul of its qualification format. The change will bring the Swiss system, known from the club Champions League, to the Nations League and qualifiers for the World Cups and European Championships, starting in 2028.
A 36-Team League Replaces Traditional Groups
Instead of the familiar group stages, UEFA will organize a single league featuring 36 national teams. Each team will face six different opponents, playing three matches at home and three away. These opponents will come from varying levels of skill to reduce predictable matchups and aim to boost the appeal and value of broadcast rights.
Global Calendar Changes and Venue Announcement
FIFA will introduce double international breaks allowing teams to play four matches within a 15-day span. This adjustment is meant to streamline scheduling and fit more games into shorter windows.
Additionally, it was confirmed that the Camp Nou stadium will host the 2029 Champions League final, marking another highlight on the football calendar.
- New format starts: 2028
- Number of teams: 36
- Matches per team: 6 (3 home, 3 away)
