UEFA has launched a new public platform named Clearline designed to clarify video assistant referee (VAR) decisions during Champions League games. The initiative aims to provide fans, clubs, and other football stakeholders with clear insights into how and why refereeing choices are made on the field.

The Clearline platform offers an open-access digital guide that details the criteria behind VAR interventions. Users can explore when VAR should be used, covering scenarios such as penalty calls, direct red cards, attacking build-ups, offside rulings confirmed by the Video Operation Room (VOR), and cases of mistaken identity.

Consistency Focus Led by Refereeing Chief

Developed under the leadership of European refereeing chief Roberto Rosetti, this tool is meant to bring consistency and transparency. It includes dedicated sections explaining UEFA's standardized review processes and provides official explanations of VAR decisions from Champions League matches.

After each major fixture, supporters can visit the platform to see how real-time decisions compare with examples stored in the official library, helping them understand the reasoning behind the calls.

Unified Approach with Europe’s Top Leagues

Clearline emerged following a meeting between UEFA officials and refereeing heads from Europe’s five leading domestic leagues. They agreed on a common VAR language to harmonize decision-making across competitions.

This move aligns with similar efforts in domestic football, such as Spain’s CTA working on a refereeing criteria manual. The platform is designed to reduce confusion and create a shared understanding of refereeing standards among everyone involved.
