Tzolis Joins Arsenal: Ready to Make an Impact

Arsenal’s newest winger has barely paused for breath this summer. While much of the squad is still easing back into life after the World Cup, Christos Tzolis is already deep into his second pre-season.

Signed to fill the void left by Leandro Trossard’s move to Besiktas last week, the Greek forward joins Arsenal on the back of a prolific campaign in Belgium, where he produced 22 goals and 29 assists for Brugge. Those numbers turned heads at the Emirates, but it was the way he did it – direct, aggressive, constantly threatening in the final third – that convinced Arsenal he was the right fit.

Nominally, Tzolis will operate off the left, the role Trossard often occupied, but his game stretches across the front line. He can dart inside to shoot, pull wide to stretch play, or slide into central pockets to link attacks. Arsenal see him as a left winger first, a multi-purpose forward second.

The key difference right now? He is already up to speed.

While many of Mikel Arteta’s players are still on holiday or only just back at the Sobha Reality Training Centre, Tzolis has been working. Greece did not qualify for the World Cup, which left him with just under four weeks off at the start of the summer. Even that was not a full break. Once he learned of Arsenal’s interest, he spent part of that time training alone, keeping his fitness high in case the move materialised.

It did, and his schedule intensified. Before the deal was completed, Tzolis went through two weeks of pre-season with Brugge, returning to training in early July. He even got minutes under his belt, playing 45 minutes in a friendly against Feyenoord.

He did not just turn up; he signed off. Cutting in from the left, Tzolis bent a superb finish into the top corner in that match, a farewell goal that underlined exactly what Arsenal think they are getting – a winger who can decide games from the edge of the box.

Now he has already linked up with his new team-mates in north London, joining sessions as Arsenal officially began their pre-season programme this week. The contrast in preparation is stark. Much of the squad is still managing the physical and mental hangover from a World Cup summer, and those who did report back only returned to full training in recent days. A short camp in Marbella last week helped, but it did not match the intensity of the work Tzolis had already put in with Brugge.

That gap matters. At this stage of pre-season, sharpness separates those who jog through early friendlies from those who grab them.

Arsenal’s first test comes next weekend against Girona in Spain. Tzolis is expected to travel with the squad and is in line for his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt. Given his workload over the past month, there is every chance he arrives in better condition than many of his new colleagues.

A new league, a new club, a new left flank to make his own – and, crucially, no need to wait for him to catch up.
