The much-anticipated fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua has finally found a date and venue. After months of speculation, reports reveal the bout will take place on December 11th at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
Negotiations Over Location and Date
Since signing their contracts in April, discussions about when and where the fight would happen stretched on. Eddie Hearn and Dana White were involved in a back-and-forth, with White pushing for a U.S. location and Hearn insisting it remains in Britain. White even claimed Joshua declined an offer to fight at Madison Square Garden, but British promoters stayed firm on hosting the event on home soil.
Confirmed Details and Other Proposals
American sportswriter Dan Rafael tweeted that if everything is finalized soon, December 11th in Cardiff will be the day. Alternative dates floated around included November 28th and December 4th, but permission and permits are still being sorted out. Confirmation could come as early as next week, as Hearn clarified White is not promoting the fight.
A Long-Awaited British Heavyweight Showdown
This fight has been a dream for British boxing fans, especially with both fighters approaching the latter stages of their careers. Earlier this year, Fury stopped Mariusz Wach in seven rounds and had previously beaten Arslanbek Makhmudov at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. After his win, Fury called out Joshua directly from the ring.
Joshua returned to the ring in July after a tragic car accident last December that claimed two of his friends' lives. He knocked out Kristian Prenga in round two despite being dropped twice early in the fight.
Promoters Clash Over Fight Control
The drama has mostly come from the promoters, not the fighters. White accused Hearn of trying to block the fight and halt talks, but Hearn insisted all contracts are signed and valid. He said on iFL TV that White attempted to disrupt the British event by trying to move the fight to America and convincing Joshua to break his contract.
"Dana White thinks you can throw a little bit of money at someone and they’ll dance to your tune. Not on A.J.’s watch," Hearn said. "Anthony Joshua cares about British boxing and the contract he signed. That’s why this fight won’t be in America."
Principality Stadium Ready for the Historic Event
The fight is expected to start late in the UK to accommodate American viewers. The Principality Stadium, which seats 74,000, has hosted major fights before including Joshua’s victory over Joseph Parker in 2018 and Joe Calzaghe’s win against Mikkel Kessler in 2007. It now prepares to stage what promises to be the biggest all-British heavyweight showdown yet.
