A career that promised so much
Bentancor grew up inside one of South America’s great football institutions. Coming through the youth ranks at Peñarol, he was regarded as one of the club’s standout prospects, a striker tipped to push towards the first team in a system that has produced some of Uruguay’s finest.
He did not take the direct route to stardom. After leaving Peñarol, Bentancor moved to Deportivo Italiano, competing in one of Uruguay’s amateur championships, chasing a path back into the professional game rather than accepting that the dream had gone.
Those who watched him closely saw a player still fighting, still believing there was another chance to be taken.
A trial that ended in controversy
That chance, he hoped, would come in Buenos Aires.
French outlet RMC reported that Bentancor had travelled to Argentina for a trial with Deportivo Riestra, a club in the country’s first division. It was the kind of opportunity that can change a career: a good week, a few goals, a contract, and a new life across the River Plate.
It did not unfold that way. Riestra chose not to offer him a deal.
Reports state that Bentancor left the trial accusing several fellow hopefuls of stealing his clothes. The episode added a layer of bitterness to an already bruising experience, and he returned to Uruguay without an agreement and without the future he had gone there to secure.
Days later, came the devastating news of his death.
Grief and tribute
Deportivo Italiano confirmed Bentancor’s passing and marked it with a heartfelt message on their official channels, underlining how deeply he had embedded himself at the club despite his young age.
“You will remain alive in every goal celebration, in every embrace, and in the hearts of everyone at this club.. your club Deportivo Italiano. Rest in peace,” the tribute read.
For a player once seen as one of Peñarol’s brightest hopes, and for a young man still fighting for his place in the professional game, it is a brutally abrupt ending.
