Tottenham Break Transfer Record Again with Sandro Tonali Signing
Tottenham have smashed their transfer record for the second time in a single summer, landing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal worth up to £100 million ($133m).
Newcastle knocked back Spurs’ opening £75m ($100m) offer, but the London club refused to walk away. Negotiations dragged on, the numbers climbed, and a second bid finally hit the mark, sources told ESPN.
The agreement is structured around an immediate £92.5m ($123m) payment, with a further £7.5m ($10m) in performance-related bonuses triggered by European qualification. Tottenham wanted a statement signing. This is it.
It comes just weeks after Spurs broke their previous transfer record to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85m ($72m), a move that already looked bold for a club still recovering from a bruising Premier League campaign.
Last season, Tottenham flirted dangerously with the drop, only just steering clear of relegation. The response from the boardroom has been emphatic: rebuild the heart of the team, and pay whatever it takes.
With Tonali and Fernandes arriving for a combined outlay that would have been unthinkable not long ago, Spurs have ripped up their reputation as cautious spenders and rebuilt their midfield in one ferociously expensive summer.
