Tottenham are moving fast, and they are moving big.

After tearing into the early weeks of the summer window with the kind of spending usually reserved for clubs in full rebuild mode, Spurs are now training their sights on the front line. The next phase could be explosive: a double swoop for wide forwards, headlined by Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo.

Spurs shift the project to the wings

The groundwork has already been laid elsewhere in the squad. Tottenham have thrown around a combined £237m on Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, reshaping the spine with serious investment. Smart business backed that up: free transfers for Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson plugged gaps without denting the budget.

Goalkeeper? Addressed. Defence and midfield? Reinforced. The obvious question now sits higher up the pitch.

Tottenham want pace and unpredictability in wide areas, and they’ve started on the right. Savinho is the primary target there. The Manchester City winger has already signalled he wants out and is open to joining Spurs, with talks between the clubs described as advanced enough for a deal in the region of £60m to be considered realistic.

That alone would be a statement. But the real intrigue is on the opposite flank.

From Kroupi blow to Gakpo opportunity

Tottenham’s initial plan to add a versatile forward focused on Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi. The club were, according to TEAMtalk, less than 24 hours away from launching an opening bid when everything collapsed. A fractured metatarsal, surgery, and a three-to-four-month layoff turned a near-done move into a non-starter. Kroupi will not be leaving Bournemouth this summer.

That setback has forced a rethink – and opened a door.

Attention has swung to Cody Gakpo, a player Liverpool have never fully nailed down to one role, but who has shown he can damage teams from the left and through the middle. Fabrizio Romano recently flagged the situation, telling Men in Blazers that Spurs “really like the player” and urging observers to keep an eye on the situation over the coming weeks.

Now the interest has sharpened.

Journalist Paul O’Keefe reported on Saturday that Gakpo has emerged as a “leading contender” as Tottenham hunt for attacking reinforcements. At 27, the Dutch international fits the profile: experienced, in his prime, and tactically flexible. He prefers to operate off the left, but his time at Anfield has underlined his ability to step inside and lead the line when required.

For Tottenham, that versatility is crucial. It mirrors exactly what they hoped to gain from Kroupi – a wide forward who can morph into a central striker without disrupting the system.

Liverpool name their price

Flexibility, though, comes at a cost. Liverpool are not positioning this as a bargain exit.

Anfield Watch report that the Reds have set a valuation of £72m (€85m) for Gakpo. The number is not plucked from thin air. Liverpool are said to have used Anthony Gordon’s £69m move to Barcelona as a benchmark, nudging their own figure slightly higher on the back of that fee.

“Anfield Watch understands Liverpool have priced Cody Gakpo at £72m (€85m),” the outlet stated, adding that Gordon’s transfer formed the base of their thinking.

For Tottenham, that means any move for Gakpo would sit on top of the £60m package being discussed for Savinho. A combined outlay north of £130m for two wide forwards would be a bold escalation of an already aggressive window.

A defining call for Spurs’ attack

The equation is clear. Spurs have rebuilt their base. They have moved decisively for Savinho on the right. They lost Kroupi to injury at the last moment. And now, with Liverpool’s price on the table and Gakpo firmly on the radar, they face a defining decision.
