Tom Ince Joins Tranmere Rovers in League Two

Tom Ince drops into League Two for the first time in his career after signing a two-year deal with Tranmere Rovers, in one of the standout moves of the lower-league summer.

The 34-year-old forward, son of former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Ince, arrives at Prenton Park with a heavyweight CV: 103 league goals in 505 appearances and a career spent almost entirely above this level.

He came through the ranks at Liverpool before making his name with Blackpool, then taking in spells at Hull City, Derby County, Huddersfield Town, Stoke City, Reading and most recently Watford. Now, for the first time, he will test himself in the EFL’s basement division.

Manager Darrell Clarke made no attempt to play down the significance of the signing.

"He's played at a very high level throughout his career," Clarke told the club’s website. He highlighted exactly what Tranmere believe they have secured: “He'll give us creativity, composure and versatility in the final third, while his experience will be invaluable to some of our younger players."

That word – experience – will carry weight in a League Two dressing room. Ince has operated under pressure at promotion-chasing clubs, battled in relegation fights, and carried creative responsibility for sides up and down the Championship. For a squad looking to punch upwards, that kind of know-how can change the mood of a season.

He will not have long to settle. Ince is in line to make his Rovers debut on Saturday in the EFL Cup preliminary tie against Rochdale, a potentially useful early glimpse of how Clarke plans to use him and where he will fit into the attacking structure.

Then comes the real business. Tranmere open their League Two campaign at home to Shrewsbury on Saturday, 15 August, with a player who has spent a career chasing bigger prizes now leading a different kind of charge: dragging a proud club back towards the levels he knows so well.
